When I posted about an okra shake recipe in last week’s “What’s on My Plate?” post, a few people asked for the recipe, but I didn’t have one to give them. I’ve been planning to come up with and post a Fuel Pull okra shake recipe at some point for quite a long time, and I figured that now would be as good a time as any, especially because we got a new blender and I enjoy experimenting with it.
This deliciously-creamy chocolate shake reminds me of a Wendy’s Frosty. I was originally intending for it to have a brownie batter flavor (hence the baking powder in the recipe), but when I tasted it I immediately thought, “Frosty!” I’m cool with that. It’s not a killer dark chocolate like some healthy recipes tend to be; this shake is more along the lines of milk chocolate. It needed some extra creaminess so I added 2 tablespoons of half and half. This adds the creamy factor while remaining in THM: Fuel Pull territory. Perfect! If you don’t have half and half, you could replace it with heavy cream, but that will put this shake in THM:S territory.
Another creaminess component in this shake that also happens to pack a lot of superfoody healthy benefits is…OKRA! I’ve heard lots of success stories from people who started losing weight again after plateauing by adding more okra to their diets, but I haven’t made a lot of okra shakes up to this point because our blender hasn’t been working right. Every time I made an okra shake, I got pieces of okra in my shake. And pieces of ice. I’m not a picky person, but pieces of okra and ice in what is supposed to be a smooth milkshake kind of takes the fun out of drinking said milkshake, especially if those pieces keep clogging up my straw. We finally got around to buying a new blender (a refurbished Vitamix 5300), and now I understand the hype over okra shakes. With a good blender, the okra is indistinguishable and adds a great smooth texture! And drinking my veggies in a milkshake? That’s pretty cool.
This shake is super filling, and I like it even better once it starts melting a little. When I eat Frosties, I like to eat them with a spoon and scrape around the melting edges until it’s gone. Same deal here.

- 1½ c. crushed ice
- 1 c. frozen diced okra*
- 1 c. unsweetened almond milk**
- ⅓ c. low-fat cottage cheese
- 2 T. whey protein powder
- 2 T. half and half
- 1 T. cocoa powder
- ¼ tsp. baking powder
- ⅛ tsp. THM Pure Stevia Extract Powder (or more, to taste)
- Dash salt
- ¼ tsp. glucomannan
- Blend all the ingredients together until smooth and creamy. Enjoy!
**I often use a mixture of almond milk and water for economy. If you have a nut allergy but can use coconut products, replace the almond milk with carton coconut milk.
If you don't have half and half, you could try 1 T unsweetened almond milk and 1 T heavy whipping cream. This would still be a THM:FP, but don't add any more fat.
Suggested Products:
- Whey Protein Powder
- THM Pure Stevia Extract Powder
- Glucomannan
- Vitamix Blender (5300 Certified Refurbished)
Kelli says
Great flavor but I am still having to chew Tony pieces of okra… is it the blender, or my technique? I kept blending to try to fix and all it did was make it thinner, not cut the okra haha. I want to try again though, so help!
Briana Thomas Burkholder says
Sounds like you need a better blender. 😉 I love my Vitamix! I’ve also used a Ninja but it didn’t work as well.
Gwen says
Just made the Chocolate Dreamy. So delicious. Thank you. I saw a reference to Cherry Pie Baked Oatmeal in one of the other comments. I searched but didn’t find the recipe. Is it only available in your book?
Briana Thomas Burkholder says
Yes, that recipe is in Convenient Food. 🙂
Rosalinda Vargas says
Friends,
Although I have a Vita-Mix, I tried to prepare this (as written) in a NutriBullet 900 so as to avoid cleaning the Vita-Mix jar. Not recommended-it will burn the NutriBullet’s motor. Not into retirement, but it will struggle and smell overheated. It will go way better in the Vita-Mix. Batch transferred and lesson learned! Splendid recipe-thank you, Briana:)
Shannon says
Thanks for the head’s up. I’ve been thinking about getting a NutriBullet, or something similar, for exactly that – avoiding the large VitaMix cleanup!
Rebekah says
This may be a silly question but I’m pretty new to THM. 🙂 I made this and the consistency is great! But the flavor is just ok. I’m thinking it might be my protein powder. I can’t remember the brand I bought, and I don’t have the packaging any more. But, it’s completely plain & unsweetened. I’m wondering – did you use flavored and/or sweetened protein powder? I’m thinking that might help the taste! Thanks for any help!
Briana Thomas Burkholder says
Mine is an unsweetened vanilla. 🙂 Feel free to bump up the sweetener if you like. You could also mess with the cocoa amount, add more vanilla or another extract, or increase the salt a bit (sometimes that balances the sweetness).
Meredith says
I just tried this and my mind is officially blown. I simply could not believe the amount, the taste, all of it. I’m so happy that I bought both of your cookbooks recently! Btw- I’ve been having the cherry pie baked oatmeal for breakfast and it’s GOOD.
Briana Thomas Burkholder says
Aw, thank you, Meredith!
Tina says
I love this shake. It’s so versatile. I don’t do THM as much as low carb/sugar I pretty much use as is except like to add Gentle Sweet as the sweetener and also add Collagen. Use home frozen blanched okra. And I love to add a few Lily’s Chocolate Chips to get little chopped up bits of chocolate throughout – delicious!!
Sue says
New to this shake. I made it and was drinking it happily when I saw I missed the baking powder. I’m curious about that? What benefits does it add?
Briana Thomas Burkholder says
It adds a cake batter/Frosty flavor.
Holly Prax says
I just made this shake and loved it! I substituted the chocolate peanut whey protein powder! It was delicious!
Anna says
I try to stay dairy-free and definitely remain low sugar/carb. Has anyone tested other things in place of the cottage cheese aside from the banana or keifer that has worked well?
Briana Thomas Burkholder says
I recommend that you try this dairy free chocolate shake >> https://www.briana-thomas.com/dreamy-dairy-free-chocolate-shake/
That would be simpler than trying to figure out substitutions for this one. 🙂
Joanna says
This was incredible! I wasn’t sure about it with the first sip but by the 4th sip I was in love with it! I made it in my $2 Cuisinart blender from Goodwill and it worked just fine. I blended just the okra and almond milk first till there were no chunks. Then I added crushed ice and again blended until no chunks. Then I added the rest. I used it as my meal for breakfast and it totally kept me full until lunchtime. I haven’t had any kind of dessert or sweets ( except 85% dark chocolate) for 3 years so this tasted divine!!
Erica w says
Alright Mrs. Thomas, you did it. You finally got me to try okra. I’ve had the bag in my freezer for so many months and just couldn’t bring myself to do it. I read all the comments about this and thought hey, I have all the ingredients. I did it. I loved it. Just like a chocolate shake but I’m finally getting in a FP and okra even at the same time!!! You’re nailing it. Even my two and a half year old drank hers all gone 🙂
Briana Thomas Burkholder says
Yay! I’m so happy to hear that! Welcome to the club. 😉
Celista Duke says
Hi. Have you ever used baked okra in this recipe? I never blanch it before freezing because baking it,after thawing, keeps it from getting slimy in my recipes. Does the frosty need the slime as some sort of thickener?
Briana Thomas Burkholder says
No, I haven’t tried that! I recommend storebought okra (that has been blanched) because it’s not as slimy as fresh okra or unblanched okra. I like the “thickness” that the okra adds to this shake, but I don’t want it to edge over onto the slimy side.
Betsy says
Briana, Thank you so much for this recipe.
Peer pressure persuaded me to try the popular THM green drink. T
hankfully, it didn’t go to waste, as I added it to soup, in a large kettle.
Knowing I didn’t have to wash my Ninja and could just make the Chocolate Dreamy,
created a happy ending, to my green drink story! whew….. “)
Gratefully,
Briana Thomas Burkholder says
Haha…this made me smile. I’m afraid I’ve never been a fan of green drinks either (unless it’s just a handful of spinach in a smoothie or shake). I prefer to eat my greens in a salad!
Kelli says
We made this as written and then added caramel extract, almond extract. It was a hit with my 9 and 13 yo’s too. I feel good we got okra in them too.
On second thought I forgot the baking powder.
Keep up the good work.
Sheryle says
Can’t wait to try your Choc Dreamy. I’m out of cottage cheese. Will it work ok without it?
Briana Thomas Burkholder says
I definitely recommend including the cottage cheese for optimum creaminess. 🙂
Kathy Pearson says
Love this shake, and it being a Fuel Pull makes it even better. What does the 1/4 t of baking powder do?
Briana Thomas Burkholder says
I’m so glad you like it! The baking powder adds the “Wendy’s Frosty” flavor. I use it in shake recipes to add a cake/cookie/brownie dough flavor.
Jerri says
Y’all. This is so good. If you’re a coffee drinking gal, try using frozen cubes of coffee instead of ice!
Melissa says
Ohhhhhh my goodness…..just made this. I had my doubts. Although I love okra I was completely unsure of this recipe. It was amazing!! I used chocolate whey protein. First sip I could taste the whey but after that I just tasted Wendy’s frosty just like you said!! No joke y’all!! You gotta try this!! Thank you Brianna!!
Briana Thomas Burkholder says
Yay!!! I’m so glad you liked it!
Rebecca says
What does the baking powder do?
Briana Thomas Burkholder says
Makes it taste like a Frosty. 😛 Baking powder adds a cake batter flavor – that’s the theory, anyway.
Adriane says
I like to scrape around the frosty too!! I haven’t had one in years though!!
Desiree says
I am new to THM. Can I ask why you use Swanson protein vs THM? Is it cost? Is it ingredients? Just curious if it is a better choice? I am needing to order a protein powder.
Briana Thomas Burkholder says
I prefer the taste of Swanson protein powder to THM’s, and I find that it dissolves better too. Ingredients-wise THM’s is a little better, but the nutritional info is very similar. I look out for Swanson sales (which happen fairly often) and stock up.
Stephanie says
This was delicious! My children agree! I did make a few tweeks. I used fat-free Kefir instead of cottage cheese (1/2 cup) and threw in some spinach too (just because I’m hungry all the time and trying to increase my greens). I also used 3 teaspoons of super sweet blend instead of stevia (the kefir made it a bit more sour so I thought it needed a little more than just stevia.) Absolutely delightful!
Katherine says
What is the baking powder for? Could that be left out?
Briana Thomas Burkholder says
It’s for flavor. Baking powder can add to a cake batter flavor, and in this case it adds to the Wendy’s Frosty flavor.
Buffie says
I am new to THM. Can I have this with a lunch of chicken salad (chicken on top of salad mix) or is that going way overboard? Basically, is this a stand-alone meal?
Briana Thomas says
This can be a stand alone meal because it includes protein (and a dose of veggies!), but if you’re still hungry, feel free to add the items you mentioned. 🙂 It will depend on your own individual appetite. This shake isn’t that calorie dense, so adding a salad on the side isn’t a problem.
Sl says
I want to make this but do not have glucose. Will it be ok w/o it?
Briana Thomas says
Do you mean glucomannan? Glucomannan is a necessary thickener in this recipe, but you can substitute xanthan gum if you have that. 🙂
Joanne Kayser says
I purchased your cookbook, and looked for this recipe in it. It was not there that I could see unless you changed the name. So I guess I will print chocolate dreamy off the computer and attach it into your cookbook ! I will definitely be making this one over and over and over again! I may even memorize it
Briana Thomas says
Thanks for buying my cookbook, Joanne! Necessary Food contains recipes published through July 2016, and the Chocolate Dreamy will be in the second book I’m working on right now since it was published after that. I’m glad you like it!
Debra says
You don’t have to hide Okra from me. I love it in any shape, fashion or form. This was delicious and filling. I subbed some chocolate whey powder and added some chocolate/hazelnut flavoring to your recipe and it worked out really nice. BTW, I love your cookbook and look forward to your next. My husband has lost 19.5 pounds on the diet and I have lost 18 in 3 months. So, we are definitely keeping on with THM.
Thank you for helping us be successful.
Briana Thomas says
Wonderful – you’re easy to please, then. 😉 Your additions sound delicious! Way to go on your progress!
Terri says
Can I skip the protein powder?
Briana Thomas says
If you skip the protein powder, you’ll need to add another protein source on the side and the shake won’t be as creamy.
Jules says
Just made this for a late lunch. Yum!!! I used the THM chocolate whey as well as dark cocoa. I am admittedly addicted to chocolate 🙂 thanks for sharing your kitchen talent with us! This one is a definite keeper!!
Briana Thomas says
Oooh…that sounds delicious! Thanks for trying it!
Carol Hayes says
Hi Briana!
Congratulations to you and your hubby!!!
I have been making and enjoying your chocolate dreamy quite frequently in my Ninja blender. We just bought a new Vitamix, and what used to be great, turned out slimy, glue-like texture in the Vitamix. Do you suppose that it was overmixed? Or what might have caused the change in texture?
Briana Thomas says
Hi Carol! Overmixing would be my best guess too. It worked way better in my Vitamix than our old Ninja, so don’t give up hope! I would just try not mixing so long next time – just until it’s smooth and creamy. You may also want to try decreasing the amount of glucomannan. What brand are you using? The THM brand is a bit stronger than what I use, so if you’re using that, try decreasing it by 1/3 or 1/2 and see if that helps. 🙂
Ada says
This tastes just like a Wendy’s Frosty! Tried it this morning, and loved it! Thank you for such a great recipe 🙂
Laura says
I kinda can’t believe it but it was so good! I bought some frozen okra awhile back and just got up the nerve to try it. I am running low on protein powder so I halved the recipe and I’m so glad I did because it was more than enough – filling and satisfying that sweet tooth. I did add more cocoa and more sweetener after tasting. Thanks!
Nisha says
This was very yummy! I used 4 tsp. of Pyure sweetner. I was concerned about the amount of okra, but followed the tip in the comments that suggested blending the okra and liquids first. Thanks for another
delicious THM snack. ??
Mel says
Hi ! I’m still trying to figure out the guidelines for an FP. I was thinking between the two dairy products in this it would make it an S. could you help me understand ? Thank you !
Briana Thomas says
In a Fuel Pull, you don’t need to count the fat in your lean protein source (the low-fat cottage cheese, in this case), and the half and half acts as your “up to 5g added fat.” 🙂
Mary Ko says
Thank you Brianna, I too, was “burned” by the bad okra taste by another recipe somewhere. I also have had my okra in the freezer since the summer, and have not dared to touch it again. But this recipe seems to be a good recipe to re-introduce okra in my shakes! I only used 1/3 cup of okra out of fear. 😉 But it taste so good and no okra taste at all! Another plus is that my 6yo boy wanted to try it, I was happy to share, but told him to leave me some. He did not like it! Yay! All for me!! Thank you so much!
Crista Hagan says
Love this smoothie! I’ve made it with both okra and frozen cauliflower (subbed for okra). Delish both ways! Question: BAKING POWDER????? Why baking powder??? Thanks!!
Briana Thomas says
Glad you like it, Crista – and great idea with the cauliflower! The baking powder is to add the cake batter/Wendy’s Frosty flavor.
Karen Ernst says
This shake is amazing! I use Erythritol and added 1 TBLSP extra and it was great! Thanks for sharing this recipe!
Sarah says
This shake is so good! The first time I made it I wasn’t sold, it wasn’t sweet enough and I just tasted the okra, so I added some more stevia and caramel extract. It made all the difference for me! I’m drinking one right now, even though it’s only 12 degrees out. Lol.
Suzanne Kell says
Great! Delicious!
Jean says
I don’t understand. My almond milk has 3 g of fat in 1 cup. My 1% cottage cheese has just under 1g of fat in 1/3 cup. 2 Tbs. of Half and Half is just under 3.5g of fat. How is that under 4g grams total to make this an FP. I think it contains a little under 7.5g of fat which makes it an S. :-/
Briana Thomas says
Hi Jean! Over the years, Pearl and Serene have added numbers as suggestions for the people who like to count, but they’ve always made it clear that we can just separate ingredients and do fine on the plan. As someone who has a history of obsessing over things, I’ve chosen to take the ingredient separation approach because I know I could easily take counting way too far! It’s always worked well for me, so I don’t usually calculate nutrition info in my recipes and just separate the S and E ingredients, counting FP ingredients as FP. Almond milk is a FP, low-fat cottage cheese is a FP (plus it’s a protein source, and you don’t need to count the fat in your lean protein source in an E or FP setting), and the half and half is your allowed added fat (5g or less in an E or FP setting). That was my thought process, but you’re welcome to omit the half and half and use additional almond milk instead of that’s your preference! 🙂 Thanks for stopping by!
jm says
Hi
I live in the North, can’t find okra anywhere here. I read asparagus or broccoli were good substitutes. What is your input on this Thanks
Briana Thomas says
I’m afraid neither of those would have the same texture that help make this shake so creamy, but you’re welcome to try!
Linette says
The first time I made this i followed the recipe exactly and it was delicious!! I like to use homemade kefir in my smoothies, though. Would kefir in replacement of the almond milk work? (Knowing that fat free vs full fat would make a difference in fuel type)
Briana Thomas says
I’m glad you liked it, Linette! I’ve never used kefir so I’m not sure the answer to your question. If that’s a sub you’re used to making and you enjoy the flavor, I don’t see why not!
Tara says
Made it this morning for the first time. Love it! I preferred some extra cocoa powder, and although I could detect a bit of okra taste I realized it really does give the flavor profile of a frosty. I’ll never think of frosties the same way. I also adore okra in any shape or form. So fun to have it in a chocolate frosty now. I’ll have to introduce my Texan mama to that one. My grandpa would be proud as he grew tons of okra in his garden. Thanks for a great recipe. One of many.
Donna says
Hi Briana, loving this Frosty like shake as much as I am loving many of your other recipes!
My question is should I store any leftovers in the fridge or freezer? Way too much to complete in one sitting!
Briana Thomas says
I’m so glad you like it, Donna! I actually recommend just making a half batch of the shake if it’s too much for you in one sitting. If you put it in the fridge it will slowly melt and probably get more slimy the longer it sits (due to the okra), and if you freeze it it will get too hard to eat and I’m not sure that it would thaw with a good consistency.
Colleen says
This shake is so delicious, but I added up the macros with the ingredients I used (unsweetened almond milk, 2% cottage cheese) and I got 9g fat, 12g carbs, 231 cals, 20g protein. So not a fuel pull, at least with my ingredients! Looking at the numbers I’m not even sure how I can rearrange things to make it a FP, S or E… But I’m going to try and figure it out, because it’s so good!
Briana Thomas says
Hi Colleen! In THM, ingredients trump numbers, and this shake uses moderate amounts of all FP ingredients. 🙂 Keep in mind that you need to subtract fiber from the carbs to find net carbs, and you don’t need to count the fat in your lean protein source (the low-fat cottage cheese, in this case). I think that may put your numbers down where they need to be. Good question!
Colleen says
Good to know, thanks for the extra info!! Been enjoying this shake everyday regardless, it’s my new favorite thing! Thanks for all of these great creations!
Kara says
-sigh- Fine, fine, you win…okra is going on my shopping list! Can’t wait to try this in the next few days, sounds divine (you had me at ‘frosty’).
Shannon says
I have no idea why this is so delicious. It might be the baking powder:) Wow, though.
Jen says
Delicious! Perfect for a hot summer day!
Rachel says
Very good and filling! I’ve also made it with 1/2 of an avocado instead of the okra. That adds quite a bit more calories, but I liked it even better.
Kate says
I made a cold, brown, slimy drink. I didn’t use ice (never do—don’t care for the coldness), but replaced with the same amount of water (that is, 3/4C liquid instead of 1 1/2C smashed cubes). I really was looking forward to this drink because I really-really like those Frosties from Wendy’s. This isn’t it.
Perhaps, if I just used your basic shake recipe and cut back seriously on the chocolate that most people seem to enjoy—I used 2T cocoa instead of one and couldn’t taste it in the Chocolate Dreamy. I couldn’t taste the okra either (I like okra), but it was sure slimy . . . thick and slimy to where it wouldn’t traverse the straw.
I drank as much of it as I could stand (~12 fl oz) and chucked the rest down the drain.
Briana Thomas says
The ice really is imperative for breaking up the sliminess of the okra and balancing all the other ingredients. I personally would not be able to stomach an okra drink without ice. 12 whole ounces was definitely a heroic attempt!
Laura says
I just tried this and it isn’t any colder than an actual Frosty so if you like the real thing, try it as written with the ice. Or add a little more cocoa and sweetener if you think it needs it like I did.
Paige says
I have been on THM 1 and a half years and I just made this! I didn’t know what to expect, but this is the best thm chocolate shake I’ve had!! The texture is amazing. I can’t taste the okra. It’s great! The only downside I have is…it leaves a weird after taste in my mouth. I think it may be the baking powder. But it’s worth it. ?
Dee says
And IF i live overseas and can not get okra can I still make this??
Briana Thomas says
In that case I recommend finding another chocolate shake recipe. The okra is an integral part of the texture and volume in this shake. 🙂 Feel free to check out my Shakes & Drinks index for recipes that don’t include okra: https://www.briana-thomas.com/indexes/complete-pictorial-recipe-index/
Missy says
I make this without okra and it is still pretty thick and creamy!
mamak says
First time I made this I was like “meh. It’s ok.”
But I have been back to make it several more times and even feel like I’m craving it. Something very satisfying about this large, slushy chocolaty shake.. The okra adds a certain earthiness, but I guess I don’t mind! Thanks!
Sinea says
Briana, would xanthum gum work instead of glucomannan? I have that in my cupboard!
Briana Thomas says
Those generally work in a 1:1 sub, but I haven’t tried it in this recipe. I’d give it a try, though!
michelle says
I am very new to THM, this as a FP can be breakfast, correct? thank you!
Briana Thomas says
Hi Michelle! Yes, you can use this as a FP breakfast. 🙂
Deb S says
Wow, tried it and loved it. Made another recipe for a similar shake from someone else yesterday and didn’t like it at all.
Loving your cookbook too!!!
Thank you!
Karla says
Love the flavor. Don’t love the chunks of okra. I even have a Vitamix. Will have to try and blend it up really good with the almond milk at the beginning before adding the other ingredients.
Joanna says
I just tried this for my breakfast, and absolutely LOVE it! I just tweaked the recipe to what I had on hand!
Thanks so much for sharing!
Drive-Thru Sue says
This is awesome, Briana! They say the average person gains 7 to 10 pounds during the holiday season. Don’t be average! Drink your okra and lose 7 to 10 pounds this year! 🙂
Drive-Thru Sue says
What kind of cottage cheese do you use, Briana?
Briana Thomas says
We usually get the store brand from Sam’s Club. 🙂
Barb says
I have had okra in my freezer since the summer…just didn’t have the nerve to use it! My recollection of okra was opening a tin of it, when I lived in North Carolina. When I dumped that slime into my pot…I gagged and dumped it in the garbage! Hard to get over early memories!
So, this am..I blended it for multiple minutes…as per recommondations from others. It melted enough that I couldn’t use a spoon! However…it is a good way to ingest okra! I added some Truvia and another Tblsp cocoa to make it “mine” Thanks for the recipe!
Mary says
great recipe, Brianna! I added a bit of expresso powder and that knocked out the okra taste
Kristina says
Do you have to include the cottage cheese? I’m out.
Briana Thomas Burkholder says
I definitely recommend including the cottage cheese for optimum creaminess. 🙂
Shari says
This is A.M.A.Z.I.N.G.! Cant even taste the okra!
Susan Penny says
This sounds amazing! Is there anything i can substitute the cottage cheese for? I have had problems with it in the past. I think it’s a texture thing.
Briana Thomas says
Everything gets blended up, so I doubt texture would be an issue here. I promise you don’t taste it! I don’t know of any foolproof subs, unfortunately, but you’re welcome to just leave it out (but it won’t be as creamy).
Patricia says
I made this for the first time yesterday and loved it so much I made it again today. This was my lunch both days and super filling. ?
J says
I was amazed at how delish this was !!! Thanks for a great recipe. I will be making this often. 🙂
Joy says
This is delicious! I have a giant sweet tooth, so I added a couple of tablespoons of Truvia. 🙂
Carly says
This recipe is a game changer! If I had not made it myself I never would have believed it had 1 cup of okra. I tastes so much like a Wendy’s Frosty!! My husband and boys even sucked it down. Kids have no clue they ate okra, lol and hubby well he couldn’t believe it. You cannot taste it at all! Thank YOU for this recipe. I can have a chocolate shake again….. AND IT’S HEALTHY!!! It’s a Miracle!!
Briana Thomas says
Aw, I’m so happy to hear that!
Megan says
Hi Briana,
I’m dying to try this recipe but don’t have gluccie. How would it come out if I omit this ingredient?
Thanks
Briana Thomas says
Do you have xanthan gum? If so, I’d try that in place of the glucomannan. It wouldn’t be as thick and creamy without the thickener. 🙂
Kathy says
If I use xylitol instead, approximately how much should I use?
Briana Thomas says
This sweetener conversion chart is a handy help. 🙂 http://www.trimhealthymama.com/main-home/sweetener-conversion-chart/
Terri Brown says
This link does not work. Any chance someone has this info saved so it can be shared?
Briana Thomas says
Ugh, yes. THM updated their website and didn’t provide redirects for all their old links. Here’s a new chart: https://media.trimhealthymama.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/4/2017/05/07222306/THM.Sweetener-Conversion-Chart.pdf
Terri Brown says
Thank you!!! That will help a lot! I ‘ve tried to guess on what the equivalents are and have not always been successful. Now I can see why!
Amy says
I may have had 3 of these in the last 3 days. Dreamy is right.
Christine F says
I love this shake!! I’ve been making the chocolate big boy from our THM friends, but this one is even better. Can’t wait for the cookbook to come. I fell off the THM bandwagon this weekend and my tummy is definitely not happy. It’s amazing to me how our bodies like when we eat healthy and cut out the processed white flour and junk. Thank you for taking time to share all of your great recipes!!
Lana says
Hey Brianna! I LOVED this shake! I have had it several times and I think it’s amazing! I ordered your cookbook the second I got the email! I appreciate you so much! You do such a great job!!! Thanks for all you do for us! When do you think your cookbook will actually be ready? So excited 🙂 Lana
Briana Thomas says
Hi Lana! Thanks so much for your encouragement! Hopefully the cookbooks will be ready to be shipped out around the beginning of December. 🙂
elaine says
just made this and it was really good. no okra taste for me. How many”doonks” of stevia is equal to 1/8 tsp? i did 2 and did add a little super sweet after i tasted it..
thanks Briana and can’t wait for cookbook, ordered 1st day!!!!
Briana Thomas says
So glad you liked it! Since a doonk is 1/32 tsp., 4 doonks equal 1/8 tsp. 🙂
Kerrie says
Just tried this and it was delicious! Thanks for the recipe:)
Jenny Liebrecht says
Briana, I think this actually might convince me to try an oKra shake. I’ve been doing THM for a year and still haven’t worked up the nerve! My husband loves your desserts, so I think he will be my guinea pig for this one. ?
A says
Can I replace the cottage cheese with something? I can’t have dairy but would love to try this recipe!
Briana Thomas says
I’m afraid I’m not well-versed in dairy substitutions. Maybe try coconut cream? The shake would no longer be low-fat, in that case.
Teresa Pratt says
I tried it with the coconut cream and it was fine as long as you don’t mind a bit of a coconutty flavor. ?
In other recipes calling for cottage cheese I have used half a frozen banana and it worked really well.
Briana Thomas says
Great! Thanks so much for letting me know!
Susan penny says
Would the banana work here? And If so what does it mane the shake?
Briana Thomas says
I don’t know if a banana would be good in this shake or not, having never tried it, but if you add half a banana, that would be this an E for Trim Healthy Mamas. 🙂
Susan penny says
Thank you so much!

I’m new to THM and a friend sent me this recipe. I made it last night with exact ingredients. It tasted like an okra shake. I added a little more cocoa and sweetener and still couldn’t get rid of the okra taste. I’m sorry, but I had to wash it down the drain. I told my friend that gave me the recipe and she made it also. She tried doctoring it up as well but ended up washing hers down the drain. I’m sorry but your chocolate dreamy wasn’t so dreamy.
Briana Thomas says
I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy it! I’ve heard tons of glowing reviews on it and really enjoyed it myself, so maybe if you try it again after adjusting to THM for a few weeks you’ll enjoy it. 😉 It definitely takes time for taste buds to adjust.
Sandra says
The MOST IMPORTANT key here is first blend the water and okra by itself until it’s just liquid … maybel 2-3 minutes. Then add the other things . 🙂 Once the okra is totally liquid there is no slime. It will be a game changer I promise
Ann Preston says
I am brand new but i saw directions in the THM cookbook on their similar shake and they advised blending everything and then add the ice and whey (which makes it “poof” up). Maybe that would help.
Cerissa says
I am not an okra shake fan either (I just can’t get over the flavor), but I do love using frozen, riced cauliflower! I’m sure you could sub that in this recipe, as it is almost the same recipe I do for my shakes.
Kelly says
I definitely recommend blending the okra and almond milk for 2-3 minutes first BEFORE adding other ingredients. Also, start with less okra and get used to the taste. I used to not like these shakes and now I think they’re yummy!
Jamie says
Best shake ever! I used pyure because that’s what I had on hand and only 3/4 cup of okra since I’m still venturing into the okra! Been doing this plan almost 2 years and this shake is in my top 3! Can’t wait to get your cookbook!

Briana, Craziest story just happened. . I was making your awesome Chocolate Dreamy Shake when I received an email from my credit card company. They emailed me because there were duplicate charges to “Carlisle Printing,” on 10/4/2016. Hmmm… I called my credit card company to research this mystery. They told me the company was located in “Ohio,” and placed my call on hold, as they checked more details. HAH! As I was Ninja-ing my chocolate dreamy shake, I realized the credit card charges were for YOUR Cook Book(s)!! How funny! (I was making one of your recipes, I was on the phone “challenging” your CookBook charges)….. LOL When the credit card company employee came back, I told them the charges were legit!
Briana Thomas says
Haha…that’s so strange! I’m glad you got it figured out – and I’m glad you enjoyed the shake!
Jennifer Williams says
Hey Briana! This looks so good! I will try it as soon as I replenish my frozen okra. Just curious…what does the baking powder do for it? 🙂
Briana Thomas says
The baking powder is what adds the brownie batter/Frosty flavor. 😉
Cyndi says
I’m guessing that when you say “diced” okra, you mean the okra slices in the freezer section? I’m hoping that I don’t have to dice the frozenslices into smaller chunks?
Briana Thomas says
Correct – this is the kind that you can buy. 😉
Jo says
: ) Great timing, I’m just getting the okra in today from the garden. Love this!
Joanna says
Thank you Briana! So creamy for a FP, I didn’t have h/h so I used 1TBLSP heavy cream & 1TBLSP water, thats keeps it FP right? With my blender I’ll need to blend the okra first and I’ll “own” it with a bit more sweetner.
I’m looking forward to my cookbook coming!
Briana Thomas says
Yep, that just sneaks in as a FP. 🙂
Kathy says
In general, can I sub xanthan gum when gluccie is called for? I have xanthan gum, but not gluccie. Afraid I won’t like the taste of it, so haven’t bought any.
Briana Thomas says
Yes, in general they’re a 1:1 substitution. 🙂

I bought okra a week ago and have been trying to get up the nerve to make an okra shake! My two year old son and I are sharing this as I type, it’s delicious!! Definitely reminds me of a frosty from wendys! I used gentle sweet & had to use a lot to get it sweet enough (I’m new to thm). thanks for a great recipe!
Briana Thomas says
So glad you’re enjoying it!
Deann says
I was glad to find this in my inbox this morning. It was delicious! Here’s a conversation from our kitchen:
Me “Want to try this shake? It’s a new recipe. It tastes like a Frosty.”
Husband “Mmm.. I like it. It has a flavor I can’t quite place. What’s in it?”
Kids “Okra!”
Husband “No really, what’s in it? It’s good.”
Briana Thomas says
Seriously?? That is so awesome!!
Arlene says
This is delicious!!! I’ve made it twice. I don’t miss ice cream cause I am able to eat delicious foods like this!!! ??
