We hear the age-old question a lot in sermons, devotional books, and thought-provoking Facebook posts (they’re few and far between, but they do exist, believe it or not):
“If Jesus were a guest in my house/walked beside me all day long, would I feel the need to change the way I live?”
Brother Steve mentioned this question in a message recently, so I thought about it. My conclusion was that there’s not a lot I would have to quit doing were Jesus to trail me all day long. No, my problem would be different:
DISTRACTION
If Jesus were my guest, I would definitely feel the need to include Him in everything I did. I would talk to Him; I would introduce Him to my family, friends, and colleagues; I would take Him to work, ask Him to help me in the kitchen, and just generally “hang out” all day. That’s what you do with a guest, right? You don’t want your guest to feel neglected. That’s just rude. And besides, this is JESUS we’re talking about!
If Jesus walked beside you…
Guess what folks. He does.
And I am supposed to treat Him as my guest, and that means including Him in every facet of my life. Because to do anything else would be neglecting Him, and that’s just rude. Put bluntly, that’s a sin. A sin that is far too prevalent in my life, because I know that I usually just rip through my day without including God in every activity. Oh sure, I do my devotions, I even write spiritual blog posts, I listen to Christian music, I live like a Christian, I pray before meals, I pray in between meals, I’m a pretty decent person…but am I really including God in every aspect of my life?
So that is my challenge to myself: how can I purposely include Jesus in all my activities today as my friend and guest?
If you have practical suggestions, please comment below! I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Thanks for the great reminder! I’m so much a Martha – and I need to be more of a Mary – being with Him and enjoying Him! Thx, Briana! 🙂

I totally agree with your first statement. As for that link, that type of exercise seems pretty dangerous to me.

I try to frequently hang reminders of scriptures around the house, leave Christian books around to read, etc to help me think about him and thank him all day long. Before I go to sleep I try to remember to thank him and praise him.

I even have trouble focusing on Him in my quiet time yet He so patiently waits for my thoughts to drift back to Him. If only we had the patience for Him that He has for us.
