Disclaimer: I bought my own copy of the new THM cookbook, but Trim Healthy Mama supplied me with a plan book to review and a cookbook to give away.
As I’m sure most of you know, Trim Healthy Mama lately released a new simplified book detailing the THM plan as well as a cookbook! Today I’m here to give you a review on both books as well as give away a copy of the new cookbook! Head down to the bottom of this post to enter.
The Trim Healthy Mama Plan Book
I was excited to see how this new book would differ from its 642 page relative, the original Trim Healthy Mama book (the new book contains only 310 pages, by the way). I was delighted to find that this new book contains the same basic information as its precursor, but in a much simpler, easy-to-read form. There are no recipes in this new book, and although a lot of the chit-chat is gone, the book is still written in a very down-to-earth, conversational tone that I like.
Some great points:
- The new plan book is laid out in a very logical manner.
- There are helpful summary pages after a lot of the chapters, as well as at the end of the book.
- Menus for purists, Drive Through Sues, pregnant and nursing mamas, and more are included in their respective chapters so each individual can get an idea of what the plan will look like in shoe leather for herself (or himself).
- Clarification is given for some information that has become available to us since the release of the first book via the main Facebook group or other forums.
One thing I do wish would be included is some exercise routines. There is a chapter on exercise that gives some basic guidelines for what type of exercise we should and should not be doing, but no specifics are given. The plan book mentions that some THM exercise videos are in the works, but I would’ve liked a few exercise routines to be included in the book itself. The old book has some that I’ve found helpful.
Old book or new book?
I’m sure some of you that are new to THM are wondering whether you should buy the old book or the new plan book + cookbook. That’s a really hard question for me to answer, because I think that either option has a lot of great resources. The new plan book is basically “THM for Dummies” (I don’t mean that in a bad way at all…people have been asking for this kind of thing for a long time, and now they finally have it! That’s great.), and really simplifies the information into a concise, easy-to-understand form. The new cookbook with its precise measurements are easy for anyone to follow. So in that sense, I would say that for most people starting out, the new duo of books is the way to go.
However, for myself personally, I would probably choose the old book. There is some information in the old book that was left out of the new plan book just for the sake of space, clarity, and/or simplification. That’s completely fine. I’m just the kind of person that likes to know all the information that I can find about something, and I loved the chit-chat between sisters in the old book. I also loved the way the recipes were written. Few exact measurements…everything to taste…bake till done – that is how I cook. I loved it. Still do. Not everyone else is like me, though (thankfully!), so I think the new cookbook is probably very helpful for most mamas starting the trim and healthy journey.
So my advice is to start out with the new book duo, but if you can get ahold of a copy of the old book at some point later on in your THM journey, I highly recommend that you get it and read it through at least once. For all those of you mamas who have read both the old book and the new plan book, comment below – which is your choice?
The new plan book does include some changes to the Fuel Cycle, as well as some new info about products that Serene and Pearl have discovered since writing the old book.
The Trim Healthy Mama Cookbook
In one word: beautiful-gorgeous-amazing. Rohnda (here’s her blog) did a great job on the photography. To my calculations, there are close to 400 recipes in this book, and they are all well put together with precise measurements, specific directions, and allergy information. You want brownies? Covered. You want family meals? Tons of them. Crockpot and one-skillet meals? Gotcha. Single serve recipes? Bam. Yummy drinks for any time of year? Right here. Dairy free cheese?? That too. There is a wide variety of recipes in this cookbook; there are literally recipes for every kind of cook.
All the recipes are clearly marked with what fuel category they belong in.
The new Trim Healthy Mama Plan Book and Cookbook are a great pair for starting out your healthy journey, and they’re also great resources for those of you who have been traveling the slim path (see what I did there?) for awhile already. These books are available on Amazon (find the plan book here and the cookbook here) and in a lot of bookstores, like Barnes & Noble. Amazon definitely has one of the best prices on these books, so I would check there first.

Feeling really sad Briana 🙁
Comp is never open to Aussies! Feeling left out.
Books, recipe items etc soooooo expensive here in Oz & postage from overseas usually costs us 3/4 on top of the total price we pay..
However, I’m very thankful to your weekly recipes & blog share. God bless you 🙂
