You all are just the best. I had promised my email subscribers that I would get Part One of our love story published last Wednesday, but it was nearly bedtime before I got the post finished. I hit “Publish,” sent it out via email, then shared it on Facebook and Instagram. Within half an hour there were so many people trying to read the post that my website couldn’t handle the traffic…and this continued until noon the following day! I’m sorry for the glitches y’all experienced during that time! My awesome tech guy made some changes so hopefully that won’t happen again…at least not for a little while. 😛 I wasn’t expecting quite so many of you to be so interested in my love life, but it’s very heart-warming to know that you’re not just here for the food! And all the comments you left. Some of them almost brought me to tears, they were so sweet! To know that some of you were even praying for a good man for me – that means so much and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. God heard!
One very important piece of business: I LOVE all my middle-aged women readers! 😉 Just thought I’d clarify that.
Thank you all for the questions you left on Part One! I figure I might as well write about what you’re interested in, eh? (The Canadians are rubbing off on me already.) You’ll find answers to some of them below.
The Questions:
“I would love to know more specifically how he discovered you? Did he know your cousin, someone you went to South Africa with, or did he stumble across your blog?”
He literally just stumbled across my blog. Apparently it was a “Suggested Blog” in the sidebar of someone else’s personal blog, so he clicked over, read some of my spiritual articles and South Africa posts, and the rest is history!
“How long was he ‘following’ you before he came to see you?”
I only found this one out after dating for several months. 😛 There was less than a week’s time between when he found my blog and drove 8 hours to come to my church that Sunday morning. In his mind, it was an urgent matter because someone else could come along and snatch me up at any time! During those few days, he sent my website to his mom and a few friends and made some phone calls checking up on what kind of person I was.
“How did he know what church to show up at?”
This one cracked me up. I generally try not to give out specific information about where I live, but he knew that I had sung with a certain group so he went to their website and found my city in the singer biographies. From there he went to the ever-helpful directory of conservative Mennonite churches and found my church, then called the number of the pastor listed. Once he got to the answering machine, he quickly hung up before leaving a message because he realized that he had actually called my dad! He wanted some unbiased information before he made that call, so he found the number for one of our other pastors. 😛
“I would be curious to know more about his upbringing and church background, and how yours and his are different/similar.”
With a name like “Burkholder,” he’s definitely born and bred Mennonite of some stripe…haha. You’ll find many, many Burkholders in Lancaster, PA, among other Anabaptist population centers. Ryan and I actually believe very similarly about theology and practical application. Both of us have grown up in a conservative Mennonite church setting, and we’ll be attending a small church of that type where he is in residency in Louisiana.
Someone else mentioned in the comments that I didn’t say anything about Ryan’s love for God, so I’ll have to remedy that. 😉 One of the things I appreciate the most about Ryan is the fact that he scorns pretense. He is the most open, transparent person I know and expects other people to live the same way. Ryan’s transparency extends into his relationship with God, and one of my favorite things to do together as a couple is to pray together, partly because I just love to listen to Ryan’s real conversations with God. He doesn’t put on any fronts – he simply is. And he has been a wonderful spiritual leader for me, setting boundaries in our relationship where there need to be boundaries, reminding me to seek God before seeking Ryan, and discussing all the deep issues of life as they relate to God and His Kingdom.
“Where in Ontario is his family from?”
The bush.
“How did your siblings react to him?”
When I got engaged, my 8-year-old brother Josh said, “I knew this was going to happen.” (With a half grin on his face.)
My siblings were accepting of him, but they were in the sit-back-and-observe stage for quite awhile. Unfortunately because of Ryan’s schedule after starting his intern year of residency in July, he hasn’t been able to make many trips to my area to spend any time with my family, so they’re still getting to know him! Especially my siblings. My parents have been able to interact with him a little more thanks to technology. But my whole family is very supportive of our relationship and I think even my most skeptical siblings have grown to like Ryan and realize that he’s a pretty good match for their big sister. 😉
“When you move to Louisiana, will you have animals to care for?”
Maybe some roaches and mice, but other than that…. We will probably be living in the city close to the hospital for now, so I’m afraid not! Traveler, my horse, will be staying at home with my family for now. I’m bound and determined to put a garden in somehow! Although gardening without readily available horse manure is going to be a new challenge for this farm girl!
“I would like to know what it is like for Ryan to be in the medical field and practice his spiritual beliefs as a Mennonite. Also do you have an address you are willing to give out for those of us who would like to send a wedding card?”
That’s a good question! I told him that you all want to hear from him at some point, so hopefully he can guest post sometime.
That’s very sweet of you to ask about sending cards! I plan to set up a business post office box when I move to Louisiana, so perhaps I can share that address a little later. Someone else asked about a wedding registry. Again, thank you so much for thinking of us. Honestly, the best gift you could give is to keep coming back to the blog. 😉 Presence is more important to us than presents, which is why we actually have not set up a wedding registry at all.
Some Snapshots:
On our first weekend together, I found out that Ryan loves a) mini golf and b) taking pictures of me.
Two weeks after we started dating, we took a road trip to Ontario with his family to attend his cousin’s wedding. We stopped in Holmes County, Ohio, on the way, and got ice cream together at the Winesburg Dariette. Why does the south not have these little roadside soft-serve ice cream places?? Side note: Ryan is wearing my coat because he didn’t bring one…it wasn’t that cold in FL in May. Another side note: one time near the beginning of our relationship, Ryan told me that he thought ice cream was for birthdays. 😛 He really has changed the way I see food, but more on that some other time. We do eat ice cream together sometimes, don’t worry.
While we were in Ohio, I took Ryan over to the place where my cookbook is printed and Leroy (the manager) gave us the grand tour. Ryan was so interested in the whole process and delighted in taking pictures of me looking all professional.
On the way up to the wedding we swung by Niagara Falls; I had never been there!
On the way home from the wedding, we stopped at Greenfield Village in Dearborn, MI. It was a very fascinating place! In the picture below, the tent you see is a reenactment of a Civil War doctor messing around on an amputated arm, complete with blood and all kinds of nastiness that was making my stomach queasy. Ryan, being a doctor, thought it was awesome. I was getting sick to my stomach and didn’t want to risk fainting in front of my brand new boyfriend, so I went and sat down.
Extremely funny story: we got back to South Carolina that night and I saw that I had been tagged in a picture on Facebook. One of my blog followers had recognized me and taken a picture! She didn’t come up and introduce herself because she saw that I was otherwise occupied. 😛
If I had to sum Ryan up in one phrase, it would probably be, “Quality over quantity.” That’s been the thesis of our relationship. We don’t get to see each other very often, but when we do we pack a lot into it and our times together are very meaningful. We did a lot of in-depth talking on that road trip to Ontario and back which really helped set the stage for the rest of our relationship. Communication (on deep, worthwhile subjects) is SO important!
But we don’t always go to tourist spots. 😉 The top of a mountain at sunrise is breathtaking:
Ryan came to visit me in South Carolina in July, right before starting residency. I got him onto a horse, and he was actually the most low-maintenance greenhorn I’ve ever ridden with.
Since we couldn’t be together over his birthday in August, we celebrated early with my family! My sister made my new peach cobbler recipe and we stuck 26 candles in the top.
Some of my siblings had never been mini-golfing, so we convinced my whole family to go one night. Ryan still beat me by one point with his consistent game. 😛
Shopping at a discount grocery store, because we both love good bargains!
In July we went to a restaurant together for the first time, and it was so special! Ryan loves Indian food and I had never had it before, so he took me to a very elegant Indian restaurant. The food was a-maz-ing. My family doesn’t eat out much, and when we do we don’t branch out a lot (because not everyone in my family has taste buds as odd as mine), so trying different cuisines with Ryan has been so much fun! And very inspirational for my culinary experiments. Expect Briana’s take on Indian food in the next cookbook. 😉
My handsome dinner partner…
This was my mom’s kitchen before I drove to Louisiana to see Ryan in August. He doesn’t have a lot of time to cook, so I made a bunch of stuff both for us to eat while I was there and also to leave there for him to pull out of the freezer when he needed a home-cooked meal. Vanilla waffles, non-THM bread, pulled pork barbecue, stir-fry and rice bagged in individual servings to keep in the freezer…Ryan’s dad dubbed me “The Meals on Wheels Brigade.”
While I was in Louisiana, we drove to Dallas, Texas, to do some sight-seeing. Ryan and I both love history, so we enjoyed a tour of the city, then went to the 6th Floor Museum.
Mediterranean buffet: another new cuisine style for me! The baba ganoush with smoked paprika (left) was definitely my favorite thing on the plate.
On a day that Ryan had to work, I did my work during the morning and afternoon, then did some cleaning for him and made a special supper. Tuna steaks (Walmart was out of salmon!); a nice salad with toasted pecans and sunflower seeds, colorful peppers, and feta; and red quinoa. And Blueberry Cheesecake Delight for dessert.
Oh – and sparkling cider for something special. 😉 Please note that not everything in this post is THM-approved….
On my trip to Louisiana in October, we went to Texarkana, where the line between Texas and Arkansas goes right through the center of the town!
We rented bikes and rode around the sleepy little town in the gorgeous fall weather.
Ryan found coupons for a private Victorian house tour on Groupon. Very neat!
Yet another new cuisine – Thai! I got a delicious curry, which I recreated when I got home. You’ll be able to find it in my next cookbook. 😉
After our engagement, Ryan sent me the most beautiful bouquet of roses I have ever seen. The note that came along with them was even more special than the flowers because I still have it! He’s a very gifted writer and has sent me a nice stack of cards, letters, and postcards over the past year!
Well, I hope I appeased some of your curiosity. 😉 The next two months will be bringing lots of changes, that’s for sure! I very much look forward to setting up my own house with my own kitchen and cooking for Ryan. If you want to stay in the loop with new recipes, wedding planning, and maybe the occasional peek into my new kitchen, you can sign up to get my posts via email by clicking here. Thanks so much for reading, and I hope you and your family have a very blessed Christmas!

I grew up in northwest Louisiana and just moved to California last year for a job — enjoy the area and be sure to try some of the seafood! I don’t suppose you’d be able to come up with a slightly healthier but still delicious version of King Cake?
Briana Thomas Burkholder says
I was actually just thinking about King Cake last week! (Must be the season for it because I keep seeing signs for it…I know nothing about such things yet…haha) I’ve actually never had King Cake so I wouldn’t know where to start, but maybe someday!
Rhadonda says
You two are so cute and seem like a perfect match orchestrated by God!! I look forward to your new cookbook and continue to follow your new adventures.
Melissa Stansell Richards, O.D. says
Thank you for your cookbook and your blog…and Much happiness in your new “married” life! If you are living in the Shreveport area..which I gather from your recent excursions… then I need to let you in of a little secret veggie stand in Coushatta, LA…just south of Shreveport on I49. It is called Ed Lester’s and you can find them on the net…they are a farm to market that have been in business since right after the Civil War!! Love their corn and small potatoes…altho we cannot have much on THM…but they also have wonderful green peppers…beans…eggplants of all descriptions…tomatoes new and old varieties and even PEACHES! (they had none last year because “not cold enough” but we have this year) You will need an ice chest but they are worth the trip for fresh veggies!! Oh yeah…do not forget about a short trip to Arkansas….Little Rock and even Eureka Springs are wonderful…. And if you are here in the fall. .the 1st full weekend in Nov. is the Louisiana Pecan Festival in my husband’s hometown if Colfax….a little too much party for me but nearby Boyce has great prices for pecans… Lots of history in old LA and a lot of the folks have roots from both Canada and the Carolinas…so you will be right at home!! Geaux Brianna and Ryan!!
Anne says
Praying for wedded bliss and blessings your way today Briana and Ryan!
Amber Cottrell says
I’m so happy for you!!! I feel like God led my husband to me a similar way. By pure chance. We will be married 19 years in May. I live in Louisiana, Haughton, right outside of Bossier City. There is definitely a big medical community here. I am from Texas. I love Dallas and funny enough havent visited Texarkana. Jefferson TX is supposed to be great too. Its on my list to visit. Enjoy all of the wedding planning and thr big day. Cant wait to see pics if you decide to share.
Gaova says
Curious question: What are you going to do about your logo??!!
Briana Thomas says
I’ll be keeping my maiden name for my business stuff since that’s what people know me by. 🙂 I am changing my last name to Burkholder for everything else, though!
Starla Fogleman says
I am so excited for you, Briana! What an amazing story! How fun it will be to share with your children and grands some day. I wish our Lord ‘s richest blessing on you both as you start this new adventure. Have an incredible time on your wedding day! Don’t sweat the small stuff……just celebrate!
Jen says
Briana! Congratulations! What a gift that God used your blog to bring you together. I’m sure you never could have imagined your future spouse would one day read it and immediately feel he needs to meet you ASAP!
By the way, I’m not sure where in Ontario you’ll have in-laws, and I understand you not handing that info out, but if you are ever in Grey County, let a girl know!
Wendy says
Congratulations! It is so wonderful to hear and see all the exciting new things you are enjoying together!
Sylvia says
Hi Briana,
I found your blog quite a while ago and have really enjoyed your recipes and getting to know you. Congratulations to you and Ryan! I am sure you all are so excited. I am a native New Orleanian and live a little north of the city. If you have any questions or just want to talk about the area, just send me an email.
Enjoy the future God has planned for you two!!! It is going to be awesome!!
Hope to hear from you,
Sylvia
Briana Thomas says
Thank you so much, Sylvia!
Melanie (Lott) Aldom says
I am also share the same hometown :-). Congratulations! I don’t know Ryan, but I have met some of his family. I grew up at the Brethren chapel south of town and the local Mennonites often join us for evening/special services. I’m sure you have heard you will get to taste the best ice cream in Canada when you visit us! I love how God is always so faithful to show Himself clearly in the details!
Briana Thomas says
Thanks so much, Melanie! What a small world! No – I hadn’t heard about the ice cream yet but now I want to visit even more!
Sierra says
Sooo excited for you two!! Also, any THM Indian recipes you come up with would be greatly appreciated! My husband and I love curry but we usually just buy bottled sauce and add in the chicken and veggies (but I’m pretty sure the sauce isn’t on plan). Good luck with the wedding planning and moving process!
Rachel Broussard says
What a wonderful love story!
I am one of your “middle-aged” fans, and I live in Louisiana (Lake Charles area).
Beware! The Cajun Cuisine in Louisiana is delicious and not THM-friendly.
Welcome (early) to our wonderful state!
Nadine High says
I found the love story of you and Ryan very interesting!!! I went to school with Ryan for a year. It’s amazing to see how God moves & leads in people’s lives. Even though I don’t know you personally, I’m happy for you both & wish God’s richest blessings on your life. I also enjoy your recipes & have your cookbook as I’m pursuing a healthier lifestyle.
Val says
So….if i may ask..did you travel with a chaperone?
Briana Thomas says
Sometimes we do and sometimes we don’t; it depends on the circumstances and who is available. 🙂
Sara Dunn says
I’m so tickled for you both and I pray the Lord will bless you both and bring you closer together as you grow closer to him.
A word of wisdom, if you will indulge one of your middle age woman followers, God calls us to love and says ‘love keeps no record of wrongdoing.’ I found that impossible to do until I started keeping a ‘record of right-doing.’ I encourage young wives and brides-to-be to keep a literal record of the things your guy does for you that make you feel warm and fuzzy. That way, when the little ugly things appear in your relationship, it’s easy to remind yourself why you love this man and forgive and forget the stinky, sweaty, dirty realities of real-life marriage.
Briana Thomas says
Thank you, Sara! That is really good advice.
Kelsie says
I’m so glad you share this side of your life with us! My husband and I “started dating” because we felt like God was leading us to get married, and we were long distance our entire relationship. It’s so hard, but makes those times together much more special. Much love to you!
Heather says
Loved hearing ur love story. I think it would be exciting to be married to a Dr. It was my dream to be a nurse, life happens n it never happened. I did however volunteer at a childrens home & got a taste of meds, feeding tubes & colostomy bags? Gods blessings!!!! P.s.. I’m also a Mennonite gal?
Jeanne says
Congratulations! What an exciting adventure for you and Ryan. Isn’t God amazing. He created you for each other and brought you together in a very unique and interesting way.
Raquel Jorgenson says
Oh my goodness!!! I’m so excited!!! I can’t wait to see what you are going to be creating Indian, Mediterranean and Thai, (well beside Mexican food since I’m Mexican Lol!!!) Are my favorite foods!!! I just started reading your blog and is helping me so much on my THM Journey thank you… i love love stories specially when God is the main writter… thank you for sharing!!!
Johanna says
Awesome story! God works in amazing ways. I wish y’all the very best!

The bush. I lived there. It’s not a good definition. And, I realise that was intentional. 😉
Since I *don’t* live there anymore, here are some of the places that are located in the bush: Joly Township (near Sundridge, but not in Sundridge); Eagle Lake Rd (near South River, but not in South River); Chaput Hughes (near Kirkland Lake, but not Kirkland Lake).
Now? I live in Idaho in the USA as a Legal Permanent Resident (not a United States Citizen).
Thanks for sharing with us. Obviously, you didn’t have to do so. He has a beautiful soul—making you two peas in a pod. Congratulations!
Hannah Grace says
Briana, this is adorable and I’m so happy for you!! I love seeing your recipes but more than anything I follow just to see what you’re up to and hear about your experiences, so this was really sweet to hear about. Congrats!

Is he doing his residency in Shreveport?
Briana Thomas says
I prefer not to give the exact location, but we’ve visited Shreveport!
Debra Milazzo says
I understand. I live across the river in Bossier so thats why I was asking. I grew up in Shreveport and go there pretty much everyday. Thats why I asked.

I love your answer to “Where in Ontario is his family from?” Ha Ha….yes, they are definitely from “The bush”!
I am not related to Ryan – but I’m good friends with his parents – and attend their church. We’re all rejoicing along with them and praying for you both…..and sampling yummy desserts from your cookbook too.
Thanks for sharing this amazing story with your readers. It truly is an example of one of God’s many miracles! God bless.
Briana Thomas says
Well hopefully we’ll be able to visit sometime in the not-so-distant future and I’ll get to meet you! I can’t wait to see where Ryan grew up. I’ve heard you’ve been getting a lot of snow!

You’re inspiring! Thanks for opening the door and letting your middle-aged followers into your relational workd. My oldest daughter was married in September, but lucky for us, they live only about 40 minutes away.

Please please please feel free to email me anytime! ❤️ Enjoy your last two months as a single girl before you are Mrs Dr Burkholder!

Thank you so much, Anna! I appreciate that.

Very very cool. You are quite game to share all of your life like that, but then again….that’s what blogging is and…that’s how he found you :):) My daughter is getting married February 23, so that’s pretty cool that I can definitely empathize with all you are doing right now. All the best. Jennifer

How interesting! I grew up in Winesburg so I recognized the background in the pic where your eating ice cream. Yummy. Also I know Leroy. 🙂 Congrats on your engagement. Wish you the best
Mary Elizabeth says
I’m so very happy to hear the good news of your engagement and upcoming wedding! I’m praying for y’all as the wedding day approaches. From your description of your time here in Louisiana, it sounds like Ryan may be in Shreveport, LA. That’s only about an hour from me! Again, best wishes for everything!
Diana says
This was awesome! Congrats again! Love the pictures!! I cannot wait to see wedding pictures!
I guess I can mention now that I have been one of the ones praying for a husband for you! I didn’t mention it before because I was pretty sure you would be totally creeped out by that from a total stranger, but since you mentioned it in your post, I will admit to it!!
I came to your blog for the food, but I love hearing about your personal life too. Thank you for sharing your journey with us!
I don’t know about other readers, but I would love to occasionally hear about your faith too – the theological basis, and/or how that works out in practical life. I have always found the conservative Anabaptist churches fascinating. I’ve been practicing full-time headcovering myself for six years, and I feel a bond to the Anabaptists on that base. I would love to hear more. However, I totally understand that this is a blog about food, and is your full-time occupation, so don’t worry if that’s not something you want to address!!!
Congratulations from our family! We’re all so excited for you!!
Briana Thomas says
Thank you so much, Diana – for your sweet comment and also for your prayers! They mean SO much. I will definitely keep your request in mind. I generally stay away from hot button theological topics because while they bring a lot of traffic, they also tend to bring out the worst in people in the comments sections and take a lot of mental energy to keep up with. I’ll tuck that away in the back of my head, though! Blessings to you for following God’s leading in your life in that way. I always think it’s so amazing to see people following Biblical commandments that aren’t mainstream.
Diana says
Boy, howdy – the comment wars! I totally know what you mean!!! Seriously, I will understand if you never want to touch on hot-button issues of faith and practice. I just wanted you to know that there would definitely be interest out there if you ever DID want to talk about those matters! 🙂
Have a wonderful New Year’s!!!
Katie says
I so love Thai and Indian foods, I make different curry dishes with naan bread. I can’t wait for your Thai recipe. I love your story. What a gift of a man God blessed you with.

Merry Christmas, Briana and Ryan. Thank you for sharing your sweet testimony of our good God bringing you two together. It is a love story that will be told again and again to your children, and grandchildren if the Lord should tarry. Praying for you both.
Michelle Pomfrey says
Congratulations! Looks like you found a good man!
Kelly says
Love is so wonderful! The smile on your face has changed. You glow now. So happy for you both.
One question: will Ryan have to grow a beard once you are married? I know nothing about Mennonites, but am learning so much from you.
God bless and Merry Christmas!
Briana Thomas says
Thank you so much, Kelly! Some Anabaptist churches do ask that their men wear beards to emphasize the God-given gender distinction, but neither the church I attend now nor the church we’ll be attending after we’re married require it (although many men in both churches do have beards). I personally don’t have a strong opinion either way; I can definitely see the benefit of it and respect the stance of those that feel strongly about it, but I don’t think it’s necessary. I guess that choice will be Ryan’s!
Jennifer Britton says
Beautiful couple!! Enjoy a wonderful life together, and Briana thank you again for all the wonderful recipes!! This sort of middle age lady with a houseful of boys loves your food!! Blessings!!!
Carolyn Ogden says
Merry Christmas from a Dallas fan!
Curiosity is getting me!
Was that Mediterranean buffet really Fadi’s? If so, you actually picked one of the best places to eat in the city! Wonderful food and I love it!
Wishing you both all God’s blessings, forever!
Briana Thomas says
Unfortunately I don’t remember what it was called, but whatever it was, it was good!

I am so happy for you and Ryan!

I am so happy for Yall! Merry Christmas! I am praying for you all! God Bless and keep you! I hope to get your cookbook and want you to know that your blog has reached beyond the tummy and to the heart! Isn’t it wonderful to see God’s plan unfold!

May God bless you both as you prepare for many happy years of marriage together ♥️ We’ve passed 41 years and God has been our guide as I know he will be there for you too. We loved reading about your courtship and will look forward to more, as you have the time.
