My hot chocolate & chocolate milk mix recipe has been a favorite of ours – and many of you – over the years. This year I got the idea to use milk powder instead of collagen for a more budget friendly option to keep on hand for my kids. It’s not considered THM friendly, but it’s perfect for children and so much healthier than storebought packets! Couldn’t be easier to mix up – there are only four ingredients!
An electric kettle is my go-to for heating water, and the milk powder means that you don’t have to heat up milk, but the hot chocolate is still nice and creamy.
I get my milk powder from Walmart, but you can also find it on Amazon: milk powder.

Do I give my children sugar free hot chocolate and then top it with whipped cream, marshmallows, and sprinkles? Yes, sometimes I do. We’re making some special childhood memories. 🙂 At least I cut way back on the sugar they WOULD have been consuming…. Moderation is key (and that is a tiny mug, btw).

This particular recipe is not Trim Healthy Mama friendly, although I don’t think most mamas trying to feed their children healthier diets are going to have a problem with some milk powder! If you’re looking for THM friendly hot chocolate, I have lots of those recipes:
- hot chocolate mix made with collagen instead of milk powder (the amounts are different)
- Fuel Pull hot chocolate for one
- single serve THM Deep S hot chocolate

Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups nonfat dry milk powder
- 1/2 cup cocoa powder
- 1/4 cup + 2 tablespoons THM Super Sweet Blend
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
Instructions
Whisk the ingredients together and store in an airtight container.
I like to use 1/4 cup of mix to 1 cup of hot water. An electric kettle is the way to go. This makes a pretty rich hot chocolate, but I often add a few ice cubes to my children’s cups to cool it down so that dilutes it a bit.
A lot of people like more sweetener than we do, so feel free to increase the sweetener in the mix if the resulting hot chocolate isn’t sweet enough for you.
