The song “Jesus, Lover of My Soul”, the lyrics of which were written by Charles Wesley, has been set to many different tunes over the years. The tune I used in this video is written in a minor key (I happen to adore minor-ish songs) that lends a hauntingly beautiful air to an equally beautiful text. You can find the music I used for this song in Hymns of the Church, that awesome hymn book I reviewed a week or so ago.
Hopefully this will be the last song I record with my computer microphone. 11 vocal tracks from a fuzzy computer mic all smashed on top of each other just doesn’t give much in the way of clarity. I tried to remove some of the noise, but that can make my finished product sound over-edited. The solution: a better microphone, which I will hopefully be getting this week for my birthday (hint, hint, Mom and Dad)…and if I don’t, I’ll be buying one myself.
Exciting news: I found a voice teacher! I look forward to seeing what I can learn from her over the next few months.
“Jesus, Lover of My Soul” (lyrics by Charles Wesley; music by Joseph Parry)
- Jesus, lover of my soul,
Let me to Thy bosom fly,
While the nearer waters roll,
While the tempest still is high.
Hide me, O my Savior, hide,
Till the storm of life is past;
Safe into the haven guide;
Oh, receive my soul at last.
- Other refuge have I none,
Hangs my helpless soul on Thee;
Leave, ah! leave me not alone,
Still support and comfort me.
All my trust on Thee is stayed,
All my help from Thee I bring;
Cover my defenseless head
With the shadow of Thy wing.
- Thou, O Christ, art all I want,
More than all in Thee I find;
Raise the fallen, cheer the faint,
Heal the sick, and lead the blind.
Just and holy is Thy Name,
Source of all true righteousness;
Thou art evermore the same,
Thou art full of truth and grace.
- Plenteous grace with Thee is found,
Grace to cover all my sin;
Let the healing streams abound;
Make and keep me pure within.
Thou of life the fountain art,
Freely let me take of Thee;
Spring Thou up within my heart;
Rise to all eternity.
