In honor of Mother’s Day coming up, I thought I should give away a copy of my cookbook, Necessary Food! To enter, scroll to the bottom of this post and use the Rafflecopter giveaway box. This book would make a great Mother’s Day gift for a special woman in your life, whether she’s your mother or just needs a little extra appreciation. In case you’re not familiar with my cookbook, I’ll tell you a little bit about it.
Necessary Food came about because my blog readers kept telling me they wanted my recipes in one easy-to-access, hard copy format. Always up for a new challenge, I started the cookbook project in the fall of 2015. Self-publishing was a much larger project than I had ever envisioned and there were many stressful moments along the way (some of them documented in my “Musings of Bri” posts), but I learned so much through the experience and God definitely used it to refine me. Necessary Food was released in December of 2016.
An entrepreneur at heart, I’m already working on a sequel. 😛 The process for this book will be more streamlined with fewer deadlines so I can be more sane through the whole process. That’s the idea, anyway. I have no idea when it will be released, and I’m not planning on setting a date at this point. It’ll happen when I have enough recipes and the gumption to jump into another publishing project.
I have been absolutely blown away by the reader response to Necessary Food. You all have been so supportive and I can’t thank you enough! To all of you who have left reviews over on my Cookbook Reviews page, thank you! (New readers – go check out those reviews if you’re on the fence about this cookbook. You’ll find out about the good as well as the bad.)
Necessary Food includes most of the recipes published on my blog through July 2016. However, about 1/3 of the 400 recipes included in the book are cookbook exclusives!
All the recipes in the book are marked with my own fuel type labeling system. As you all know, I do my best to make everything on my blog Trim Healthy Mama friendly, but…trademarks. If you want to see my labeling system, check out page 10 of the book in this cookbook preview.
I’ve done my best to make it easy to find things in the cookbook. Each recipe section includes an alphabetical index, and at the back of the book you can find a comprehensive alphabetical dual index as well as an index by fuel type! At the beginning of the Main Dishes section (the largest section of the book, with around 70 recipes) you can find the recipes listed by cooking method as well as protein source.

This cookbook is designed for ease of use and durability. With a pretty teal spiral binding and a hard cover, the book not only opens flat while you cook but it will also stand up on its own for storage instead of flopping all over your counter. The spiral binding/hard cover combination isn’t really something that has been done much before and I wasn’t sure how it would turn out, but I decided to take a chance and I am so happy with the results. Reviews from customers have let me know that everyone else is happy, too!
456 photo-filled pages between 2 hard covers give this book a solid, quality feel. Necessary Food would make a perfect Mother’s Day gift for your mom, grandma, sister…or any special woman in your life! My mom was an integral part of this cookbook project – after all, I borrowed her kitchen to test all the recipes. I’m so thankful for my mom’s support and love through the years.
