September Farm is a family business started by Dave and Roberta Rotelle in 2007…in their farmhouse kitchen! It has quickly outgrown its humble beginnings, but the product has retained its artisanal quality and received many awards. You can CLICK HERE to read Roberta’s account of how the business grew to where it is today.
September Farm sent me 5 really neat varieties to try: Baby Gouda, Maple Smoked Gouda, Nettle Blend Gouda, Garlic & Basil Jack, and Chives & Dill Jack. All were unique; all were rich and full of flavor; all were greatly enjoyed. Ryan thinks it’s pretty neat that my job involves tasting cheese. 😉
If you follow the Trim Healthy Mama plan, chances are you’ve heard some hype recently about the health benefits of Gouda cheese. If you haven’t, you can CLICK HERE to read THM’s long dissertation on the subject. Health benefits or not, I’d eat this stuff just for the taste. It’s so good. (I apologize in advance for my lack of knowledge in the realm of technical cheese jargin.) Gouda is a fairly firm, dense cheese that is much sharper than a mild cheese like mozzarella. More along the lines of a sharp cheddar, but with a different flavor. The Baby Gouda we tried had a very mellow, full flavor – distinct, but not too strong.
Mmm…this Maple Smoked Gouda was probably my favorite. It had a distinct smokiness that wasn’t overpowering. It’s not sweet, in case “maple” means “maple syrup” to you. 😉
The Nettle Blend Gouda had a unique herb twist – very full-bodied, with a flavor that reminded me vaguely of chive.
Interested in seeing the other Gouda flavors that September Farm has to offer? There are eight of them! CLICK HERE to check them out.
The Garlic & Basil Jack and Chives & Dill Jack were much softer cheeses – very creamy. The Garlic & Basil Jack definitely had an Italian flair, with a well-defined flavor that wasn’t overwhelming. (This was true of all the varieties. I was impressed with how consistent the flavor was throughout each cheese sample.) The garlic was more prominent than the basil, but the herb note was definitely there as well.
The Chives & Dill Jack was my “other favorite” along with the Maple Smoked Gouda. 😉 I love chives, and I love dill, and I love cheese. Match made in heaven. Again, very high quality, with a consistent flavor.

We love Sept farms! We live in the same town, so I won’t be ordering online, and we go to the same church! Love their sandwich shop!!! A very sweet family!

Their store is about 30 minutes from where I live. They have a very nice store, cafe, and ice cream too. 🙂 A number of years ago we sold produce at a farmers market where they had a stand for their products.

This is really neat! September Farm is just 20 min from us! And the Rotelle family used to go to the same church as us! Such a neat family! We love their cheese – especially the cheese curds! Their sandwich shop is really amazing, too! They offer their subs in a wrap instead of a roll – not totally on plan but better than a big roll!
Briana Thomas says
How neat! It’s a small world. 😉

This place is less than a hour away from us. I was just there on Monday with a friend that was visiting in the area. Just love their cheeses. Some of my favorites are the ones that were sent to you. I also added Amish Butter Cheese
to my list of favorites which was amazing. They have lots of samples to taste:>)
Briana Thomas says
Mmm…that sounds really good! I think I’ve had that one before as well. My dad used to bring these cheeses home in his suitcase when he’d attend board meetings in Lancaster. 😛
