He maketh my feet like hinds’ feet: and setteth me upon my high places. (2 Samuel 22:34 KJV)
I’m reading through the Old Testament right now, and in the midst of the narrative of 2 Samuel there’s a chapter of beautiful poetry that comes from King David’s mouth. This verse from that chapter stuck out to me because I’ve heard some discourse on the subject, so I thought I’d share it with y’all.
Do you walk the Christian life with the expectation that life will go well because you’re saved? I don’t think any of us would actually admit to that, but I know that sometimes I live life with the subtle mindset that I am entitled to a certain modicum of comfort because of my relationship with God, then when life isn’t quite as smooth as I had planned, I get offended and somewhat miffed at God because He didn’t give me what I deserve.
Guess what. “God hath not promised skies always blue.”
Unlike we sometimes convince ourselves, God never said the Christian life would be easy. In fact, He is very upfront about the fact that it is hard. But He does give us the assurance that He will give us the strength we need to face whatever comes. How do I know this? Look at that verse:
He maketh my feet like hinds’ feet: and setteth me upon my high places. (2 Samuel 22:34 KJV)
The “hind” referred to here is a type of mountain goat, probably an ibex.
God doesn’t promise to give us easy climbing, but He promises us the feet with which to do it.

This reminds me of the book, “Hinds Feet On High Places,” by Hannah Hurnard. It’s a beautiful allegory showing the yearning of God’s children to be led to new heights of love, joy, and victory. I highly recommend it! Thanks Briana for sharing with us what God is teaching you, I love watching you grow.

My children and I LOVE that book! I used to read it aloud to them. A couple of months ago my 16 year old son said “Mama do you remember that book you used to read to use about the girl on the journey with hind’s feet? I love that story!” Yes I do and still have it. He got his own copy so he can read it again 🙂

My husband and I were having a conversation about this just the other day!

This was wonderful, Briana–the reminder, the commentary, the picture and the wonderful hymn make the verse clear. Thank you.
