First published 3/12/14. I changed the name 12/6/16 to “Bri’s Mocha Shake” instead of “Mock Arby’s Jamocha Shake”, but the recipe is the same!
Can you tell that I visited a lot of fast food restaurants (and splurged) while I was at Bible school? I got home and started craving the treats I had been enjoying.
Thankfully, they’re adaptable. 🙂
This is a creamy combination of coffee, chocolate, and caramel.
It took me a little bit to figure out the secret to the right amount of each. The first try had *way* too much chocolate and coffee – and caramel extract totally did not bring the right flavor. So I had to adjust the amounts, balancing, and I found a great substitute for the caramel flavoring:
Maple flavoring.
Get some if you don’t have it. It’s good stuff.
You can find this recipe in my cookbook, Necessary Food!

- 1 heaping cup ice (I use crushed ice so I can measure better + it's easier on the blender)
- ¼ cup unsweetened almond milk
- ⅓ cup lowfat or 0% cottage cheese
- 2 T heavy whipping cream
- ½ tsp. maple flavoring
- ½ tsp. vanilla extract
- 1 tsp. instant coffee grounds
- ½ tsp. glucomannan
- 2 tsp. cocoa powder
- ½ scoop vanilla or unflavored whey protein powder
- 3-4 doonks THM Pure Stevia Extract Powder (to taste)
- Dash salt
- Blend all ingredients well in the blender. Let set for 10 seconds and then blend again.
Suggested products:
- I use the single-serve cup in this Ninja blender set all the time for my shakes. It works great!
- THM Pure Stevia Extract Powder
- Imitation Maple Extract
- Glucomannan
- Whey Protein Powder
How much is 1/2 a scoop of whey protein powder? I’m so loving your easy vanilla ice cream recipe and have got my friends making it too ! I was driving around for work and starving, only place to eat was Arby’s. I haven’t eaten there since high school and was a bit nervous. It wasn’t bad but I saw the Jamocha shake and remembered eating it as a kid. I can’t wait to try yours bc seeing it got me in the mood.
1/2 scoop = 2 tablespoons I think. 🙂 Sorry, I need to update some of these old recipes!
I too am a huge fan of Jamocha Shake…this is absolutely AMAZING!! Thank you sharing.
Wow! Not exactly the Jamocha shake I remember, but absolutely delicious. Seriously, it is like an expensive Starbucks drink. I didn’t add the heavy cream, which I’m sure would knock it out of the park, but I kept everything else the same except adding some caramel extract (I was in the mood for caramel). I’m not a fan of cottage cheese, but it is very well hidden. I’ve kept up with your blog and your adorable growing family out of the sheer joy of reading about your life due to your honest and compelling personality, but this is the first recipe I tried. Now I must try more.
Wow, I am flattered! 😉 Thanks for reading, and for trying a recipe. I’m glad you liked it!
Can I put all ingredients in a jar and blend later on? I’m trying to figure out how to get more shakes into my plan while working.
You could probably do that with everything but the ice (it will melt) and the glucomannan (it will clump when it contacts liquid).
Do you think I could replace the cottage cheese with fat-free plain greek yogurt? Also, is the point of the glucomannan for a thickener? If so, I could swap that for xanthan gum, correct?
I am definitely going to give this a try. The jamocha shake is one of my favorites, so I’d love to get something close to it with a lot less guilt!
No, I wouldn’t recommend using Greek yogurt – it’s pretty tart and generally doesn’t pair well with chocolate. The cottage cheese does a great job of adding creaminess without the tang. Yes, the glucomannan is a thickener and can be substituted with xanthan gum.
Thank you!
I’m not a big fan of Stevia. Could I substitute Gentle Sweet or Super Sweet instead? And if so, would the amount be the same? Thanks!
You can use your favorite low glycemic sweetener to taste. 🙂 Stevia is super concentrated so you’ll need a lot more Super Sweet or Gentle Sweet in its place. Here’s a chart that you can help you convert >> https://media.trimhealthymama.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/4/2017/05/07222306/THM.Sweetener-Conversion-Chart.pdf
It’s always safest to sweeten to taste, since taste buds vary so much!
This is my favorite go-to shake. I love it!
Thank you! I tried it this morning. I have a question though, could you make this an E or a FP by taking out the heavy cream? Thanks again! Loved it!
You could use half and half instead of the heavy cream for a Fuel Pull version. 🙂 It wouldn’t be an E because it doesn’t have a carb source in it, but you could add a carb source on the side for an E meal/snack.
What if I don’t have instant coffee grounds? Think I can sub coffee for almond milk?? I can sneak a little ground coffee in if need be 😉
You’re welcome to try! I’ve only made it as written, but if I didn’t have instant coffee I’d probably do what you said, taste and see how much coffee flavor you have, and add some regular coffee grounds if necessary.
One of my favorite shake recipes! Excellent
Hi Briana. Just tried this…delicious! I had to sub half and half for the whipping creams, as that was all I had on hand. Would this still be an S? Thanks!
Glad you liked it! If you used half and half and low-fat cottage cheese, this would be a FP.
Thank you for your quick response! This is what I was hoping. 🙂 Cottage cheese confuses me, though, I hate to admit. Lol. I have Daisy 2% cottage cheese, which is labeled ‘low fat’. But I also read that it’s really actually reduced-fat and that 1% is low-fat. What would you consider the 2%?
As long as there are less than 5g fat between the half and half and cottage cheese, you’re in FP territory. And a gram or two over on occasion isn’t going to be a problem. 🙂
Thanks! I’ll figure this stuff out eventually I reckon. I’m new to THM; I started back in April. ?
I am wondering if this could be made into a ‘Secret’ type shake by adding Okra as well. What proportion would you recommend trying?
I’m sure you could try that. I haven’t done a lot of work with okra yet so I’m not sure what to recommend concerning amounts.
Briana you come up with the greatest recipes. This shake was amazing….one if my favorite. Thank you!!
I love it! Just like I remember!!!
Hi your recipes sound delicious do you have any suggestions for the dairy to be substituted with something else. Lactose intolerant. 🙁
You might be able to substitute with a coconut product such as coconut cream or full fat coconut milk? I’m afraid I don’t have a lot of experience in dairy substitutions (although I do have a dairy free ice cream recipe that uses coconut milk).
This sounds so yummy! I don’t have stevia extract. Would Pyure be an good substitute? If so, a rough estimate of an amount would be great! All your recipes are so easy and have easy to find ingredients. It makes THM so easy!!
Hi Aimee! Pyure should be fine. You can find out how it compares to sugar in strength (either on the package or using Google) and use this sweetener conversion chart to help you figure out how much to use: http://www.trimhealthymama.com/main-home/sweetener-conversion-chart/
Briana, have you made this with both the unflavored and the vanilla flavored protein powder? Which made it taste more “true to Jamocha taste”?
I’ve only made it with vanilla flavored whey protein powder, but I’m sure either would work. 🙂
Love this shake. But I honestly love your first version. I use to be able to find it but not now. I’ll have to see if I can search the date. I wrote down what I could remember! Thanks for all your hard work!
Hi Christa! The only changes I’ve made from the original is to increase the instant coffee grounds and cocoa powder by 1/2 teaspoon each. 🙂 Glad you enjoy it!
sooo thankful that God has blessed you with the talent of adjusting healthy recipes for us!?
This was devine!! Starbucks has nothing on you! Can’t wait to have this for a on the go breakfast
Woohoo! So glad you liked it!
Just curious..I haven’t made the plunge to buy whey protein. Can I leave
it out or add a bit more cottage cheese?? Thanks again for your site and all the work you do!
You can leave it out if you like, but you’ll need some more protein to round out your meal. I wouldn’t suggest adding much more cottage cheese to the shake because then you might start tasting it, but maybe eat a bit more on the side or grab some extra protein some way or another.
Thank you so much! I was wondering the same thing. Protein powder just hasn’t made its way into our budget. I wish it wasn’t so expensive! This is just the drink I’ve been looking for 🙂
Briana,
You are gifted with your talents in the kitchen especially with ice creams and shakes!! The first time I made this, I thought it might be like the mocha almond toasted coconut frappe that Panara Bread use to have if I subbed the maple flavoring with almond flavoring. Well tonight I did it!! Amazing!! Now I have two of my favorites available in the same recipe with just one adjustment!! Thank You!1 Game changer at my house. I might need a better blender before too long!!
Brianna, you’ve done it again! This is AMAZING!!!!
OMG This one is a keeper! As soon as I saw this, I made it on the spot. Great for that summer caffeine/chocolate/ice cream fix.
Thank you!!
I was wondering if Xanthum Gum
Could be substituted for the glucomannen? Sorry if I spelled that wrong.
That should be fine. 🙂
Oh my goodness, Briana! I’m so so so grateful for you, your recipes, all the time you devote to tweak and write and photograph them all. I’m in love w THM and love how your site incorporates E, S, FP, and makes them so easy to find and crate. I made this recipe for a snack today. It was absolutely divine. And so filling I want even hungry for lunch!
I’ve shared your site and some recipes w my friends (anyone who will listen)
How much brewed coffee would you recommend using in place of the instant coffee grounds?
I honestly don’t know; I’m not a coffee drinker. Haha…start with a couple of tablespoons?
I’m thinking you’d probably replace at least half the almond milk with strong coffee. But I’ve already had to much coffee today so I can’t test that theory right now 😉
oh my – best drink ever. My new fave!!! thanks!! if I use 1 tsp coconut cream instead of 1 T whipping cream, would it be in FP territory instead of S?
I’m so glad you liked it, Kristen! Yes, using 1 tsp. of coconut cream would put this in FP territory. That would then be your allotted fat for that meal/snack.
this is so delicious . Just like the real thing! I wouldn’t know the difference if someone gave me this or the real thing. AMAZING!
I’m so glad you liked it, Gayle!
Amazing THM recipes. Please add me to your email list. Blessings!
You can sign up in the sidebar. 🙂 It’s not something I can add.
I hopped over here to get the updated bread recipe…and then I saw this…and I think you’ve just become my new favorite person ever. If I can get this to work, my Eldest son and I are going to be extremely happy. Jamocha Shakes are our downfall!
I just made this – this is amazing!
