Thanksgiving is past – bring on the peppermint!
I love peppermint. I also hate coffee. Bulletproof-style coffee (basically metabolism-boosting, super creamy coffee that is full of healthy fats like coconut oil and butter) sounds great in theory, and I’m sure it smells good, but since I hate coffee, I’ve taken to experimenting with other flavors of Bulletproof-style drinks. You can see some links to my latest concoctions a little further down in the post. My most recent “Velvety” creation (I chose the prefix “Velvety” for my Bulletproof-style drinks to avoid copyright issues…and it’s an apt description!) was a delicious hot chocolate that was already receiving rave reviews the day I posted it. In keeping with the flavors of Christmas, here’s a hot peppermint drink to join it!
This hot drink is not meant to be an all-day sipper but rather paired with a meal or snack. Once in awhile you could actually use it on its own for breakfast or a snack (I’d add a little extra protein powder), but don’t forget your “real food”. 😉
By the way, if you need a Christmas gift idea for yourself, might I suggest a Vitamix blender? Our Ninja gave up the ghost a few months ago so we bought a refurbished Vitamix, and it’s working great! It’s so nice to have a fully-functioning blender again, and the Vitamix does blend smoother than the Ninja did even when it was new.
Just in case you’re wondering about the flecks of peppermint in my drink, I bought some xylitol-sweetened peppermints from this site, and I’ve been having fun using them in recipes! It’s so nice to know that they’re sweetened with an acceptable sweetener.

- 1 c. unsweetened almond milk*
- 1 c. water
- 1-2 peppermint tea bags
- -
- 2 T. whey protein powder
- 1 T. refined coconut oil
- ½ T. butter
- 3-4 doonks THM Pure Stevia Extract Powder (a doonk is 1/32 tsp.)
- Dash each vanilla, peppermint extract
- Dash salt
- Add the peppermint tea bags to the almond milk and water and heat in the microwave for 3 minutes.
- Blend all the ingredients, including the hot liquid, until smooth. Taste and add more peppermint extract, sweetener, and/or salt if needed. Enjoy!
Be careful when blending hot liquids as they may cause pressure to build up in your blender. Vent the blender as needed. An immersion blender can be a good option as well.

This was sooo good! I used extra creamy almond milk, margarine instead of butter and no coconut oil (I don’t buy it). It still came out creamy. I like mine cold. Well done and thanks for creating this great recipe.
I NEVER leave comments but this- this is comment-worthy! Holy cow, I’m trying not to gulp it all down because it’s SO good and I’ll be so disappointed when it’s gone! Lol the “velvet”-ness is AMAZING. Thank you!
(I used Lakanto monkfruit instead, to taste because that’s my all time favorite sweetener!)
Why do you always have stevia for sweetener? It is so nasty. Horrible aftertaste.
To me it doesn’t have a bad aftertaste if I use the brand listed in the amount listed. I think a lot of people use too much and have a bad experience with it. But taste buds vary a lot with alternative sweeteners! Feel free to use your favorite sweetener to taste. I use stevia in drinks like this because it’s budget friendly and dissolves easily.
Pure deliciousness! Everything you make is so great!! This totally hit the spot when my low carb dinner didn’t fill me up 😂
Brianna I am in heaven. I absolutely am enjoying your velvety sips!! I wanted to take a break from coffee for a bit. I have accumulated a HUGE stash of tea and I wanted to use them up. Your velvety sips have fit the bill wonderfully. I think I am a tea convert thanks to theses Velvety Sips. I am MOST in love with this peppermint one. I LOVE mint chip ice cream, I love any ice cream that has chocolate pieces or fudge in it (I am looking forward to adventuring into making THM plan ice cream recipes from you when the weather turns warm). But this Velvety Peppermint Sip is so good, that it is going to be dessert when I want that mint ice cream satisfaction. I used Mint Medley tea and I didn’t even need the Peppermint EO. It is like drinking mint chip ice cream. I am so wrapped up in a mint chip hug right now. I thank you for your inventiveness and your dedication in sharing such yummy THM concoctions.
I’m so glad you like it, Kimi! This is definitely one of my favorites too!
This was delicious! I made it using a chocolate mint mate tea. The mint wasn’t too strong, but the velvety mouth feel was wonderful. Thanks!
Mmm…that sounds good!
I just made your peppermint sip this morning from Convenient Food. It’s delicious! (I’m enjoying the cookbook too and have made a few things–yummy. I look forward to trying lots more!)
Could you use MCT oil in place of the butter and coconut oil by chance?
I’ve never used MCT oil, so I’m not sure. Since it’s a form of coconut oil I’m guessing you could use it in place of the coconut oil, but substituting it for the butter as well would make you miss out on some of the rich flavor and creaminess.
I really enjoyed this; I think next time I’ll save half when I have it with a snack because it made a lot! Decadence!
Thanks for your adventuresome spirit! I love your recipes and am a big fan of all you do. Have a blessed Thanksgiving!
Thanks so much for reading, Rachel! <3
I absolutely love this! I don’t like coffe either, but I love warm drinks.
I just made this into a London Fog, and it’s amazing! I used an Earl Grey tea bag instead of the peppermint tea, and used vanilla in the place of the peppermint flavouring. Thank you for this wonderful recipe!
This is really good. Miss my peppermints drinks this time of year. I had to blend my protein powder with the almond milk cold or it turned clumpy. But now I know what to do it’s amazing! But can anyone tell me why putting coconut oil and butter in our drink is good for us. I saw a post on fat bombs too and wondered what they do for us. Thanks!
The pure fats of coconut oil and butter in a drink like this with added protein are supposed to rev your metabolism and nourish your body with healthy fats. 🙂 Thanks for the tip about blending the protein powder with the cold almond milk!
Love it
My daughters and I love this drink! What a warming and refreshing treat! Thank you for all your recipes and sharing such treats with us. Super excited for the mailing of your new cookbook!
Absolutely delicious!! This will be a standby!
Do you think a scoop of collagen would be just as good as the scoop of protein powder? Still the same creaminess while avoiding clumping problems? I was thinking of dissolving the collagen in the hot cup of tea before blending. If not, I’ll just try to be careful with the protein powder. 🙂
I’ve actually never used collagen so I don’t know how much creaminess it adds. It’s definitely worth a try, though!
I just made this and it was chunky. What’s did I do wrong? It looks like little bits of whey protein (I think) are floating everywhere. When I dumped it out there was about an inch of gunk in the bottom of the cup. I am so bummed – I ran to the store specifically for peppermint tea so I could make it. How would it change the drink if I leave out the whey protein?
I didn’t have any problems like that, but someone else commented about the same thing. My best guess is that whey protein got too hot because of the hot liquid added. If you try making it again, I would add the protein powder at the very end, right before blending. I don’t suggest leaving it out because it adds to the creaminess of the drink.
I’ve already made this twice. I changed my breakfast from E to S so I could have this 😉
Also, I had just made some of Gwen’s Peppermint Fudge recipe and when I cut it there were little bits and pieces left on the cutting board so I used those to garnish with. Yum!!! I’m including the link in case anyone wants it, if thats ok?http://gwens-nest.com/coldstone-peppermint-fudge-recipe/
I know you don’t do Starbucks Briana, but as a purely social coffee drinker I missed some of the fun drinks I got there with my girlfriends, especially in the fall/winter. This has a Starbucks feel to it to me, so thanks! (and it’s way cheaper and easier than going to a SB).
I’m so glad you enjoyed it, Kristine! Thanks for sharing the link – I’ve seen that before and it looks amazing!
I made this with hot coffee instead, and it is wonderful.
This was great! A wonderful hot drink on a cold night!
Can you add coffee instead of using tea bags?
If you’re into coffee, I’d just find a Bulletproof coffee recipe on Google. 🙂 I haven’t tested this with coffee, so using a recipe actually made for coffee would be safer.
You could try Briana’s Velvety Hot Chocolate recipe & replace the water with coffee and then add peppermint extract. A wonderful velvety peppermint mocha!!!
I made this with hot coffee instead, and it is wonderful.
Any reason you can’t combine this and the Velvety Hot Chocolate into a single drink? When I clicked on the link, I thought it was going to be a peppermint hot cocoa, which I’ve never had BTW.
I’d just add a peppermint tea bag and/or some peppermint extract to the hot liquid for the hot chocolate. 🙂
Drinking this now! Yummy! I’m usually a coffee drinker & love coconut oil blended in my coffee, this is my first try with it blended in a tea & I love it! Thanks for another fabulous recipe Briana!!!
Mmmm! Wonderful hot drink… Made it this morning on a dreary Monday morning! 😉
Also like the fact that this is a non-caffeine/soothing evening drink!
Thank you!
