Ready for yet another off-the-beaten-path recipe? Combing elements of the ever-popular Trim Healthy Mama Shrinker recipe (which you can see here) with the Bulletproof trend, this hot drink has lots of metabolism-boosting properties with some cool flavors and a bit of a kick! My sister Katelyn and I really enjoyed it, but my mom (who has more traditional taste buds) took an unsuspecting sip and pronounced it to be “nasty.” I think part of her response came from just plain not expecting the flavors that hit her. 😛
I used Rooibos tea in this for a deep, rich fall flavor, but you can definitely substitute another earthy-flavored tea of your choice. I think Oolong would be good (and add even more metabolism rev)! As always, feel free to adjust the flavors to your own personal taste buds. I probably would’ve added a little more ACV if I wasn’t trying to keep this recipe more moderate for the blog.
Interested in more Bulletproof-style drinks? Try this chai version, and stay tuned for a hot chocolate and a hot peppermint drink coming up in the next month!
Tidbit of info to tuck away: “Bulletproof” is actually trademarked, so I couldn’t call the creamy Bulletproof-style recipes in my cookbook things like “Bulletproof Chai” or “Bulletproof Hot Chocolate.” Therefore, you’ll find them with the prefix “Velvety,” as you see in this recipe. I thought it was a very apt description!
So – are you brave enough to try this drink? Please do, and let me know what you think! Are my tastebuds totally off the wall?

- 2 T. whey protein powder
- 1 T. refined coconut oil

- Heat the almond milk and water and steep the tea bags to make a strong tea.
- Add the second set of ingredients and the tea to a blender and blend until frothy. (Be careful when blending hot liquids, and vent the blender as needed to relieve pressure. Hi Briana, I love your creativity and your recipes. And would love to try more of your velvety drinks, but I cannot have any caffeine at all and am a “follow the recipe” kind of gal who doesn’t “substitute”! Ha ha.
Any suggestions on what to use in your “fall velvety drinks” to replace perhaps the coffee and/or chai teas?!?
Thanks so much! You make the THM journey that much more fun!
You could try a decaf chai or a cinnamon spice tea. 🙂
I know that this recipe hasn’t gotten a lot of attention lately, but I just wanted to let you know that I tried this today. I am waiting for my whey protein to arrive so I used Collagen in its place. I used 1 Tbsp ACV and accidentally doubled the ginger and cinnamon. I have to say at first it was weird, but kind of like the Yuck Yum Bitty, it grew on me rather quickly (like by the second sip).
I tried it because I had indigestion pretty badly through the night and into the morning from eating the WRONG combinations of foods. I know ACV helps balance pH of the stomach acids and the warm tea would add the comfort. While the fat and collagen would provide what was needed for a light breakfast. I have to say it fit my needs. I shared this with my mom because she would appreciate the odd combo and unusual taste. Way to go!!
Thanks for being brave enough to try it, Kimi! You’re right – it’s kind of a love-it-or-hate-it taste.
This recipe is delish! Combining the shrinker with a hint of GGMS saves a lot of ‘drinking’ time. This is touted as a SIP. , yet a Deep S. So…can I sip on it all morning or afternoon without seemingly ‘grazing’? BTW, love your recipes and cookbook.
Hi Rosemary! I’m so glad you enjoy the recipe. I’m sorry for the confusion – I just included “sip” in the name for fun (because it’s something I like to sip in the morning with my breakfast), but it is not a “sipper drink” to be enjoyed throughout the day due to the fats and protein included in the recipe. This is meant to be used as a meal or with a meal.
I made this, rather expecting to join your mom in pronouncing it, “nasty!” But I was pleasantly surprised. And yes, I’m making it for the second time now. 🙂 Velvety is a good word to describe it.
I’m sipping some now! I got all wild and crazy and used apple cinnamon tea and it’s pretty tasty! I didn’t add the red pepper in it though. Didn’t sound like a good idea before bed. ?
Hi Briana!
I have become a fan of your blog as of late and enjoy your funny/quirky/delicious posts :). So I was in the kitchen the other day and decided I wanted to make oatmeal cookies (THM E of course) but didn’t know where to start, so I just picked up ingredients and started blending (possibly not a good idea). Let’s just say I am not a cook….they didn’t quite turn out :/. Needless to say, I have a new found respect for you: How on earth do you manage to come up with all of these recipes? So I thought, maybe, you might want to perfect this recipe :).
So here it is
1 cup oats ground into flour
1 T oat fiber
1/4 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. baking soda
nutmeg
cinamon
ginger
Blend above ingredients together and set aside.
Wet ingredients:
1/4 cup egg whites
1/4 cup almond milk
1-2 T water (Enough to make a wet cookie dough texture)
1/2 tsp. molasses
1/4 tsp. Maple extract
Combine wet and dry ingredients, place on cookie sheets, and bake @350 for 5-10 minutes
Enjoy!
Now, you may look at this recipe and thinkg, “No wander it didn’t work” (LOL). But I must say this is the first time I have tried to invent a recipe :/…..The only hope I have for this recipe is your magic fingers 🙂
P.s. you really don’t have to perfect it if you don’t want to…..Just incase you do, you have the recipe 🙂
Hi Caroline! Thanks for the suggestion! I actually have an Oatmeal Cranberry Cookie recipe on my blog; have you tried it yet? https://www.briana-thomas.com/oatmeal-craisin-cookies-e/
Ha, just saw my mistake in the first comment. There is also supposed to be a tablespoon gentle sweet 🙂
I did see your recipe for oatmeal craisin cookies, but didn’t have all the ingredient 🙁 but i hope to try them soon 🙂
I finally got to try it this morning. Not sure what I expected, but this was different! I will definitely try it again. I made it exactly as the recipe says, but only 2 doonks of stevia. It was a little too sweet for me, so next time I will try it with one, or none. Also I will up the ACV to 1T than the 2t in the recipe.
I want to go make this now. Can I substitute MCT oil for the coconut oil?
So I didn’t have Rooibos. So I made it with an Irish Breakfast tea. (Black tea)
I LOVE it! I followed all other directions. It is velvety!
Thanks for sharing!
So glad it turned out for you! I’ve never used MCT oil but I’ve heard that large amounts can have adverse affects sometimes, so I probably wouldn’t use a whole tablespoon of it. 🙂
I liked it but it is an acquired taste. Will definitely make it again Only change was I added more cinnamon and will add even more next time. But good at the start of the day
Oh wow, may I ask where you got that mug Briana?? <3 It's adorable! 🙂
Thanks, Sophia! My cousin actually gave it to me. She found it at some sort of specialty shop.
Well, this sounded intriguing !
I like both Rooibos and oolong teas, so I put a bag of each in. My sweetener was a teaspoon of pyure.
Not being as adventurous as you are, I tasted all of it together without the ACV at first then a teaspoon at a time with tastes between each. This was amazingly good!! Kind of Chia like/applecidery like…. I will be making this again!! Thank you for sharing!!! After typing this I just took another sip…. it is more like APPLE PIE!!! Wow! Amazing!!!!
(This isn’t allowing me to vote it at five stars!! But it is in my book !)
So glad you enjoyed it!
I should be getting ready for work, but had to make this. Love it! I didn’t use the red pepper or vanilla- super yummy without it. Thanks for the recipe!
Laura
Woohoo! You’re the first review! So glad you liked it!
I have already had an E breakfast this morning, too bad. I will try it tomorrow!
Will be trying this. Sounds great. So looking forward to your cookbook.
