I’ve always loved the classic pairing of peanut butter and strawberry jelly, so I turned to it to create a fat-stripping milkshake that you can enjoy for breakfast, lunch, supper, snack, dessert…really any time!
During my last Fuel Cycle I was inspired to incorporate more Fuel Pulls into my diet while I’m trying to reach goal weight (you can learn more about Fuel Pulls and Fuel Cycles in the book Trim Healthy Mama). Missing my peanut butter, I created this PB&J milkshake and have been loving it ever since.
What’s the secret to the peanut butter flavor without the fat? Defatted peanut flour! This brand from Netrition.com doesn’t have the additional sugars that brands such as PB2 contain. If you buy some defatted peanut flour, use some of it in the crumbs for my peanut butter cream pie. The Trim Healthy Mama online store also carries defatted peanut flour. You can get it from Amazon as well.
You can find this recipe in my cookbook, Necessary Food.

- ½ cup crushed ice
- ½ cup unsweetened almond milk
- ⅓ cup low-fat cottage cheese
- ½ cup frozen strawberries
- ½-1 scoop protein powder (if you're not using this shake for a meal, you could probably decrease or omit this)
- ⅛ tsp. glucomannan
- Pinch salt
- 3 doonks THM Pure Stevia Extract Powder (a doonk is 1/32 tsp)
- 2-3 T defatted peanut flour (or use 2 T natural peanut butter for a THM:S option that is no longer low fat)
- Blend all ingredients together in a blender until smooth (I like to use our Ninja single-serving blender cups). Enjoy!
Suggested Products:
- Ninja blender – we use the single-serve blender cups with this set on a regular basis
- Whey Protein Powder – use this to turn this shake into a meal or snack
- Glucomannan – this thickens and smooths this shake into a milkshake
- THM Pure Stevia Extract Powder – my sweetener of choice for a rounded flavor in my shakes – it can be purchased from the Trim Healthy Mama online store.
- Defatted Peanut Flour – this stuff will fill your peanut butter craving, even when you need to take a break from the fats for a bit
Just made this for the 1st time. This will definitely be a go to snack or meal replacement for me. Thank you for the awesome recipe!
Thank you for creating this! I’ve been craving on&j on white bread since starting them, and this has finally dealt with that craving!
I’m slowly working through your cookbooks by the way, and so far everything is awesome 🙂
I swapped in almond yogurt instead of the cottage cheese (dairy allergy) and a blueberry/pie cherry mix instead of the strawberries. I was impressed how close this got to ice cream texture, and my dairy-allergy kids are thrilled with their healthy “ice cream” snack!
Awesome! Thanks for sharing your tweaks!
This is AMAZING! Doing my first 2 week Fuel Cycle and the Fps have been such a struggle! This was the perfect way to end my day!
Brianna, I’ve been doing THM for a couple years, with a break in the middle (sadly), and I’m super picky about the recipes I love, but yours so often hit the mark and become “this can’t be dieting” excellence. This smoothie is TO DIE FOR!!!!! You are so talented and I appreciate your efforts!!! Thank you so much!
Aw, thank you so much, Kristin! I’m so happy to hear that!
Hi Briana, I was just curious….I clicked on your link to Defatted peanut flour, and I noticed that it is not entirely fat free. Does netrition carry a brand that has no fat at all? Should I just ignore the fat in it?
I’m assuming you’re following the Trim Healthy Mama plan, as do a lot of my readers. The brand I linked to (Protein Plus) is the brand mentioned in the book. You’ll notice that there are 4 grams of fat in 1/4 cup, so if you’re only using 2 T, that’s 2 grams of fat which is well within THM:FP or E guidelines. 🙂
i love, love, love, this recipe!! I,love PB and j sandwiches too! Of course I haven’t had one in years. I’ve been craving them for some crazy reason. So I tried this today. I’m in pb and j heaven! Thank you so much for sharing this and many other recipes with us THMs!! I really enjoy trying your stuff!
I’m so glad you enjoy it! Great to have another PB&J fan on board. 😉
I can’t get peanut flour around my area. I can’t afford to order any right now from THM (I am planning on it as soon as I can). Would I be able to just use peanut butter and make this an S ? Thanks so much.
Hi Fran! The defatted peanut flour I have linked in the post is a little cheaper than what THM offers it, if that helps. Until you can get some, you can just use natural peanut butter in its place and consider this an S shake.
Sorry I am just getting back to you. Thank you so much for your answer. I just ordered the peanut flour. Can’t wait to try this.
Also, do you know the different’s between peanut flour and dried peanut butter?
Thank you for all the wonderful recipes.
I’ve never heard of dried peanut butter. Sounds interesting. I would guess that maybe the dried peanut butter still has the fat in it?
This is what I’m talking about. I like to use it in my smoothies. It’s really good. I will research the difference. Thank you :-). http://www.amazon.com/PB2-Powdered-Peanut-Butter-6-5/dp/B002GJ9JWS
Oh, I see. PB2 is basically the same thing as defatted peanut flour, but it has a few grams of sugar added, rendering it off plan for Trim Healthy Mamas.
I came across this recipes and was needing a quick snack to hold me over til dinner. This was prefect! Easy and yummy! My hubby couldn’t believe it was healthy, he loved it too. Im enjoying your recipes!!!
Do you use the Swanson Whey Protein Powder? I thought it wasn’t plan approved anymore? (I personally loved it!)
Confession time: I still use it. Looking at the nutrition info, there doesn’t appear to be a huge amount of difference. I don’t use it that often, so I don’t really consider it too much of a problem.
That’s interesting! I really liked it when I used it! Maybe I’ll have to rethink this . . . Thanks! 🙂
This looks too delicious! I look forward to trying it.
By the way, I just nominated you for the Liebster Award.
Check it out on my post:

Thanks Laura, I appreciate that! I’m afraid my schedule’s pretty tight right now with just getting back from Bible school and being behind in a lot of my work, so I don’t think I’ll be able to follow all the guidelines. Feel free to nominate someone else that can do better justice to the program. Thank you so much, though!
